how parental interactions with adolescents, such as quality of the interactions and communication, impact adolescent psychological distress

Abstract

Parents’ role in parental communication is imperative when it comes to the sexual development of adolescents and their behavior. This study’s main aim is to compare various research to illustrate the impacts of parental communication in molding a teenager’s behavior. While most studies on parental communication have focused on communication as a whole, this study mainly focuses on the quality of interactions and the impacts they have towards an adolescent’s psychological well-being. Data will be collected from large-scale research, which primarily focused on behavior in adolescents. Secondary students aged between 12 to 18 and of both genders will be critical for data analysis. The data analysis will be essential to show how adolescents respond to their parental behaviors and communication style. Further research will be needed to identify the role of parental communication with their adolescents’ kids on drug abuse and sexual development.

Introduction

This study aims to examine how parental interactions with adolescents, such as quality of the interactions and communication, impact adolescent psychological distress. According to Saner & Neece (2018) research, parents of children with developmental disabilities experience high levels of stress as compared to raising a healthy child. Stress is a consequence of the behavior of the children rather than their intellectual ability. Therefore, the research relates to child behavior and parental interactions with the child as bidirectional. However, the study shows that parents with less stress show more positive parenting behaviors, leading to excellent communication.

On the other hand, parents with Significant stress tend to project their child a more complicated and lack responsiveness when interacting with their child. In Schiff et al. (2014) study, adolescents growing up in homes having nonviolent conflicts are at a high risk of being exposed to psychological distress. There is also proof that parental intimate partner conflict has a significant impact on the adolescent, which can be seen through emotional withdrawal, aggression, and psychiatric symptoms. Therefore, parents must provide a structure at home, which provides clear guidelines of the adolescent’s behavior, followed up consistently. According to Van Pete gem et al. (2019), regulating children’s expression can lead to parental child conflict, especially if it is considered inappropriate. For instance, it becomes an issue among adolescents as they keep on questioning their parents on the rules put in place. Anole et al. (2015) also encourage parental affection and control as solutions for adolescents with psychological distress. This is because children with depressed parents exhibit signs of anxiety and depression compared to those who do not have depressive parents.

The main interest of this study will be on the quality of parental communication in adolescents’ upbringing and its impacts. This is because raising an adolescent kid has proved to be a significant challenge to every parent. The teenage stage is characterized by what and how much they are willing to tell their parents about their life. Therefore, parental interaction is essential in this stage as it helps a parent identify what is affecting the adolescent’s child and what is causing psychological distress,
