Discipline in athletics
My philosophy as a coach in athletics is to encourage athletes to be responsible and self-driven by creating a conducive learning environment both on and off the playing field. Also, athletes should maintain high standards of discipline to ensure a relaxed atmosphere is attained to utilize their talents by avoiding harmful or unwanted behaviors. Discipline plays a crucial role in coaching because it ensures the set goals are achieved within the stipulated timelines. Additionally, athletes will remain focused and committed while in and off the field by ensuring teamwork and harmony is attained within the team. Furthermore, it creates optimal learning and playing environment both to the players and to coaches.
When coaching, I recommend general rules that cover a variety of areas; for example, punctuality should be observed in all areas, whether waking up, going to the field, sleeping, assembling, and any other timings to adhere to every time. General rules are coupled with common sense that helps athletes to be responsible and know what they want to achieve.
Moreover, most athletes are preparing to become respected professionals; therefore, they are self-driven, and rules are to guide them.
To maintain discipline within the team, I prefer disciplining an individual player who has made a mistake. Punishing a particular player is fair and just because those not involved were not part of the issue that arose. Moreover, dealing with an individual player will enhance discipline among other players because they will know that each one will carry their cross.
The areas that should be included both on and off the field include maintaining safety and using appropriate equipment by practicing continuously to manage and keep fit. Also, proper communication, care, and respect for everyone are encouraged among the team members and coach. Besides, teamwork and time management are crucial in whatever they do and be responsible whether on or off the field. However, athletes who break the team rules must be disciplined; for example, those who do not keep time are warned and made to practice beyond the stipulated time. Furthermore, those who break the rules frequently are expelled from the team, especially if they are not tolerant and not participating actively within the team. Violation of regulations without regarding what is expected from the team is not acceptable and will lead to punishment, suspension, and even expulsion from practicing.
In a team, some players do not observe the rules and those who are obedient and disciplined. The positive consequences must be used to reinforce ethical and acceptable behaviors by rewarding and encouraging such athletes. Positive approaches will inspire and motivate dedicated and disciplined players to achieve their set targets in athletics and be successful. However, negative approaches and consequences are used to discourage and punish bad behaviors. The negative attitude can either change the acts of the athletes who had gone astray and, at the same time, send away the players who are not committed within the team. Furthermore, both positive and negative approaches will strengthen the team and ensure the order is maintained.
