Primary groups
Primary groups are essential in shaping a person’s personality. They help to mold, shape and develop an individual’s character. In essence, a primary group influences a person’s ideas, nature and ideals through socialization and consequently build their traits. That involves learning social norms, values, morals, standards, cooperation, beliefs, culture and sympathy. Close friends, intimate partners, family, childhood friends, and community forms the primary groups and entail a long-lasting relationship between members. Regular or daily face-to-face interactions and common cultures are essential in maintaining primary groups. The church is my primary social group and has significantly shaped my personality.
Participating in church activities such as helping needy people, particularly during thus Corona pandemic has improved my social life. As such, being a church member fulfill musical-discussion/ several psychological needs such as companionship, affection, cooperation, love and exchanging ideas. Members of the primary group often live close to one another, which is essential in reducing mental stress and emotional tensions. Also, participating in group activities enhances a person’s sense of belonging and members consider them essential community members. Going out to collect money from church members and provide needy community members with gift cards to purchase essential goods makes me feel important in my primary group.
Primary groups influence spontaneity which creates an informal interaction between members. That helps to address each other’s problems. Also, primary groups inspire each member to pursue common interests by upholding the welfare of others. Members cooperate and inspire each other, and everyone appreciates this interest and pursue it together. Another notable contribution of primary groups is providing security for every member, especially the invalids, children, needy, and older adults. This security is essential,es pecially during pandemics like Corona, where such groups of people are more susceptible to contracting illnesses. For instance, our church recognized the essence of helping each other and initiated the drive to collect money and gift cards to assist those significantly affected by Corona pandemic.
