The relevance of the theme “The Yellow Wallpaper”
Introduction
The yellow wallpaper advocates for the placement of a woman in society. John convenes his wife through patronizing as he allegedly takes her for a summer vacation. The woman is, however, not convinced that the vacation is medical. She rather feels it a mechanism of advancing chauvinistic ideas. During the vacation, the woman comes across tattered wallpaper on the bed (Gilman 24). The picture on the wallpaper, however, disturbs her since it symbolizes the predicament of a woman in a masculine society. Her efforts to hide her embodiment bear no fruits since it encounters challenges from both John and Jennie. This paper expounds and gives insight into the relevance of the topic to the themes and the main ideas.
The main point of view alludes from the first encounter with the blurb. The audience is in this case enticed to figure out the expected content in the story. It is at the point where the woman is subjected to boredom that she decides to write a personal journal. John alleges that his wife is sick and thus liable for a vacation away from the ‘noisy’ society. The ventures are, however, meant to derive women of their rights as she is diminished the right to either read or write. Despite, the blockage, John’s wife goes ahead to writing a secret journal (Gilman 89). The secret personal journal symbolizes the secret suffering that women in the society persevere. She would further not hesitate to note the yellow wallpaper that is similarly in solitude. It can thus be identified that both the woman and the wallpaper represents women and their predicaments in society. As John enters the room the wife hides out the paper. But eventually, John notes her attention to the paper that he becomes extremely irritated. The audience here notes that men are not willing to her women enlightened (Hamilton 220). Furthermore, as men realize the efforts of women in self-enlightenment, they become aggressive. The role of Jennie in blocking the attempts of John’s wife also symbolizes the proportion of women who are stumbling blocks of freedom to women. However, the relentless efforts of the woman in setting free women in the society are symbolized in her continued glimpse on the wallpaper. The aspect is neither blocked by John nor by Jennie.
The main theme in the novel ‘The yellow wallpaper’ is the role of women in a masculine society. Readers are thus aroused to capture the main idea in the story at the first stare on the blurb. It is identified that John and Gilman work in collaboration to eliminate John’s wife from society. The aspect can be termed as a measure to keep women off the enlightenment. The efforts, however, provoke attempts for self-enlightenment. She thus resolves to write a personal journal though secretly. Additionally, she notes an abandoned and tattered yellow wallpaper bearing the picture of a woman. The picture thus represents the predicaments that women go through in society. John is not in a position to entertain his wifes’ stare on the wallpaper. She, however, doesn’t desist from staring on the paper as a symbolism of setting free women in society. Jennie is also a barrier to the women’s effort since she collaborates with John in diminishing the rights of his wife.
