what are the dominant motives of each candidate?

Charley Adams prioritizes cooperation among workers. He pushes those under him to get them to perform optimally and out of their comfort zones. His motivation is the achievement of positive results. He rewards every subordinate when it comes to performance bonuses.  He is also easy going, and he gets along well with fellow employees. He makes an effort to ensure that there are no barriers between him and other colleges.

Bill Stuart is motivated by challenging assignments, and he has the desire to further his career. He likes to make the most out of any opportunity that he comes across. Bill is a loner, and so he is more comfortable when he is working alone. Bill does not like restrictions that come with bureaucracy in a working environment. He also preoccupies himself with the most challenging tasks.

Ray Johnson’s motive is to get ahead in life by all means possible. He grew up in a challenging environment, and he knows how to survive. Ray loves living a lavish life, which is evident from the way he wears expensive clothes, driving big cars and throwing parties. Ray protects his reputation by all means and does not allow anyone to criticize him. He likes to be in control since every subordinate has to consult him before doing anything different from routine.

 

What is the implication of these traits for the success of each candidate if selected for the general manager position

Charley Adams promotes cooperation. Cooperation is vital as it allows employees to work as a unit, which reduces disagreements. Harmony in a work environment improves the relationship between workers, and in turn, this translates to productivity (Schreiner, 2020). Cooperating also brings about job satisfaction. Workers enjoy being at work if they are in good terms with the other colleagues. Employees are also able to buy in, and they feel valued since the management will consider their opinion. Charley ensures that everybody gets something when rewarding performance bonuses. This appreciation ensures that nobody feels left out. It also eliminates unhealthy competition, which can be detrimental as is can cause bad blood between employees.  By pushing the employees to improve their performance, He increases the chances of success since the workers become more productive. This pressure results in a higher output.

. Bill Stuart’s personality allows him to have a high power of concentration since he is not distracted by many things. Therefore, Bill can be useful in decision making, especially when decisions only require his say. His ideas are likely to be well thought out. Bill is expected to be more enduring and less likely to burn out since he will not involve himself with unnecessary commitments. Bill also has a personality that can help him exercise diplomacy. He can make observations from afar and illustrate different perspectives without any emotional attachment. In terms of effective leadership, Bill is laid back and can be realistic about his strengths. He can check his expectations concerning work progress.

Bill is good at taking up new roles and challenges that add value to his career. He can, therefore, be a productive manager since he is ready to learn. He, however, has the disadvantage of not being a good team player and not cooperating with others at work. He does not make an effort to mentor subordinates, and this can be counterproductive. There needs to be a connection between the manager and the other employees. Having a consensus makes the accomplishment of tasks much more manageable. But since Bill likes to take new challenges, he can take the challenge of learning how to get along with other people even if it isn’t easy for him.

Ray Johnson likes to always be in control and does not like being criticized. To become a good leader, one needs to learn how to consider other people’s take or opinion. This ensures that the leader does not miss out on great ideas, which results in positive results. Allowing constructive criticism enables a leader to enhance his leadership skills, which helpshelps them produce better outcomes. Employees always agreeing with you as a leader should not always be looked at as a good thing. This phenomenon can prevent you from getting valuable information about performance improvement, cooperation, leadership strategies, and weaknesses(Lynde, 2018). Ray seems to put himself first before anyone and anything else.

A manager should understand that the organization is more significant than one single individual. With such an attitude, a manager makes decisions with the organizations’ best interests at heart. Ray is more likely to focus on benefitting himself than achieving the company’s goals, which will derail success. Ray’s morals are also questionable since he even gets involved with female employees besides being married. A manager who lacks morals can affect the credibility of an organization(Juneja, 2020). A company that displays a high level of morality earns the respect of society, promoting product acceptability by the population.

 

What should Susan recommend one of these candidates for the position or look for external candidates?

It would be better to select one of these candidates for this role. Hiring internally helps in retaining organizational knowledge. Transitioning to a new role within the same company is smoother than hiring an external hire. This is because the person does not have to adapt to a new environment since they are already used to working in that surrounding. Internal candidates are familiar with the organization’s culture, processes, and procedures (Krell, 2015). They have also already established relationships with fellow employees. It is also cheaper, and lesser time is consumed in the case of internal promotions.

Charley Adams is the best fit for the role of general manager. He has proven to have leadership qualities that would help the organization to achieve its goals. He advocates for cohesion among employees, which will make the accomplishment of goals much more manageable. Strategies that he has applied in his current position would still be valid if used at the general manager position. He is capable of promoting cooperation between managers in different departments, which would boost productivity. He is ambitious, and he expects people to perform at their level best, which is a useful attribute for a general manager.

There are high expectations for the general manager, and therefore him pushing his subordinates is understandable. He only needs to be advised to be modest about it. He is good at appreciating and recognizing the input of all employees.  He would, therefore, be an approachable leader, and his subordinates would work comfortably under him and would be motivated. Bill, on the other hand, would not be the best fit for this role since he still needs to work on himself in terms of how he relates with colleges, and this would take time and so he is not ready to become a general manager. For Ray, he should not be considered because he doesn’t have the qualities of a good leader. He would not care about pushing the agendas of the company and would concentrate on his gains.
