Immigration in the US

The number of offices currently held by foreign-born citizens in the United States in all government levels is low. The report was revealed by the National Academies of Sciences reading this week. Most immigrants, mainly from Mexico, encounter several barriers in their quest to become United States citizens. Every immigrant who requires to live and work in the United States must qualify for the green card. Immigrants from Mexico obtain their green card after twenty-two years since application, which is a big challenge to Mexican immigrants. The concept of illegal identity explains low levels of political engagements among immigrants in the United States.

Integration barriers restrict many immigrants from becoming legal United States citizens. In 2011, Gonzales carried out 150 interviews on undocumented students in the United States (Yoshikawa, 2017). In his research, Gonzales identified that some undocumented students learn how to survive as illegal citizens in the United States during their development. As a result, these undocumented citizens cannot run for legislative seats because they lack proper credentials, which explains why there is low foreign-born representation at all levels of the United States government. In the United State, for a candidate to qualify to run for the presidential post, he/she must be a citizen in the United States by birth. Also, other electoral seats require that candidates should have been living in the United States for the last ten years. In addition, the green card is necessary for immigrants to be allowed to run for electoral positions in the United States, which takes a period of twenty-two years for Mexican immigrants to acquire the green card. As a result, only a few immigrants can meet all these legal requirements; hence illegal identity explains low levels of political engagements among the immigrants in the United States (Banks, 2015). Strategies have been implemented to improve political participation among immigrants in the United States

Immigrants forms a large group of the population in the United States. The government has come up with policies to encourage unity among immigrants in the United States. Even though the immigrants come from different parts of the world, they share common experiences about the United States. Uniting the immigrants makes them form their own political parties with their own candidates, which effectively improves political engagements among immigrants in the United States.
