Role of Nursing Informatics in Healthcare
Introduction
With emerging technologies in healthcare, nursing informatics has become an integral part of nursing globally. Nursing informatics has taken many forms in the last decade, expanding to cover a more extensive area. We examine the roles of nursing informatics in analyzing patients’ data and technological skills required in practice.
Role of nursing informatics in health care systems
Advancement of education and technology has seen specialization on informatics and ICT. Roles have increasingly focused on acquiring, analyzing, and implementing clinical information systems. Nursing informatics specialists are increasingly getting employment in technology firms, consulting firms, whereas some opt for their entrepreneurial ventures. Nursing informaticists primary role is to work with patients’ data and IT to promote peoples health.
How nursing informaticist impact client safety
Nurses can use sensors, diagnostic imaging, digital cameras, and other technological devices in evaluating threshold for action by alerting rapid response teams (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). Online apps and portals provide a medical history of a patient for review and diagnosis. Patients can also access their medical history. ICT knowledge is a fundamental skill necessary for nurse informatics. Big data analysis skills and the use of data analysis software are required as ICT proficient nurse can perform. Telemedicine through telestroke, telepsychiatry, and teledermatology have enabled remote medical consultations, diagnosis, and assessments.
Conclusion
Nursing informatics has improved patients data management and retrieval. Communication has been made easier by the use of technology. Clients’ safety has dramatically improved with nurse informaticists acquiring required technological knowledge and skills.
