Report on Intervention Programs
Question 1
Three approaches have been taken to address the challenges faced by individuals with mental illnesses, the homeless, and the victims of drug addicts. The ‘Housing First’ initiative is concerned with providing housing for homeless people and then supporting their desire for change. Crisis Intervention Training involves training the police and other relevant officers on the skills required while dealing with individuals with mental problems. On the other hand, the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion involves helping victims of drug addiction to access medical help instead of arresting them. Initially, the mentally challenged, homeless, and the victims of drug addiction were being arrested and detained in jails. The arrests were not solving the problems and had been adding additional costs to the taxpayers. The police department has been saved from the challenges of spending on unnecessary arrests.
Question 2
Society tends to deal with issues from a judgmental point of view without considering the causes of the issues. For example, the society believes that the homeless are not doing enough to acquire homes and should, therefore, be punished. Also, the lack of well-established structures to help the mentally challenged individuals has been leading the police to make arrests to protect lives. The effective interventions appear to have been lacking sufficient backing from relevant authorities.
Question 3
The college-educated individuals are in a better position to come up with helpful plans for society. For example, a society may not be aware of the reasons why drug abuse is increasing in a neighborhood. Poorly educated college individuals may not be different from the rest of the society and thus may not be in a position to help in times of crisis.
