Ethical and Spiritual Decision Making in Healthcare

Aspects of the readings I find most interesting

In the first reading, the most interesting aspect is the difference between science and scientism. Due to the similarity of the two words, science and scientism represent different fields. According to Burnett (2019), science seeks to explore the natural world using established and delineated methods, while scientism is a speculative worldview about the ultimate of the universe and what it means. Whereas science gives accommodates new and validated findings, scientism dismisses any new knowledge outside speculative boundaries.

In the second reading, the most interesting aspect is the importance of spirituality in healthcare. Despite technology and science, providing medical solutions, compassion and spirituality help many patients on their journey to recovery. In line with Puchalski (2001), patients who are spiritual and surrounded by compassionate people have a more positive outlook and a better quality of life. Thus, caregivers and physicians should provide not only medicinal support but also moral and spiritual support for their patients.

My view of the analysis of disease and healing in the readings

Illness and healing are based on much more than science and technology. Although science and technology have enabled phenomenal advances in medicine, healing is a spiritual aspect. As stated by Puchalski (2001), a cure is not possible for many illnesses, but there is room for healing. Many patients suffering from chronic diseases heal when they accept their health condition and leave at peace. Acceptance helps patients to cope with pain and to have hope of a better life. Some patients refuse to accept the state of their health, which increases their pain and suffering during medication. Therefore, in as much as physicians and caregivers focus on curing diseases, they should also focus on the spiritual aspect of healing, an equally important issue.
