Annotated Bibliography on Immigration
Abramitzky, R., & Boustan, L. (2017). Immigration in American economic history. Journal of economic literature, 55(4), 1311-45.
Immigration has been receiving negative reception in most parts of the world. The US has been in the middle of the immigration crisis with natives appearing against immigration. Over the years, immigrants have been finding the US as a land of opportunity. In 2017, Abramitzky & Boustan researched the changing position of US natives on immigration. The researchers found that the natives were mainly concerned with the negative impacts of immigrants on the job market. Immigrants have been accused of providing cheap labor and taking on opportunities that would have been preserved for the natives. The importance of this study is that it highlights some of the reasons why immigration has been receiving cold reception in most countries. The campaign to lift immigration restrictions could, therefore, face significant challenges from governments that have met the negative side of immigration.
Borjas, G. J. (2015). Immigration and globalization: A review essay. Journal of Economic Literature, 53(4), 961-74.
Borjas researched in 2015 to assess the relationship between immigration and globalization. The positive claim on immigration is that it enhances globalization. However, the advocates for a positive perception of immigration overlook the misfortunes of immigration. Borjas was explicitly motivated to analyze the claim that immigration restrictions should be lifted. Most scholars and governments have been arguing that lifting the restrictions on immigration could generally improve the world’s Gross Domestic Product. The research by Borjas brings out questions on the authenticity of the claim of lifting the immigration restrictions. Typically, confusion exists concerning the position of governments on the issue of immigration. The research recommends that structures should be put in place to address the issue of immigration. Clear guidelines should be set as to whether immigration should be viewed as a negative or positive idea.
Klingeren, M. V., Boomgaarden, H. G., Vliegenthart, R., & de Vreese, C. H. (2015). Real World is Not Enough: The Media as an Additional Source of Negative Attitudes Toward Immigration, Comparing Denmark and the Netherlands.
Immigration has been viewed differently by different people. The most common perception concerning immigration is that it is portrayed negatively. Most of the times, immigrants are seen as a burden to the country that hosts them. Moreover, the media has been reporting differing figures concerning the number of immigrants. In 2015, Klingeren, Boomgaarden, Vliegenthart, & Vreese, did research to assess the claim that media has been an additional source of negative media portrayal. According to the research, the media has not been reporting the real figures of immigrations. The reasons that the researchers had concerning the position of media in the immigration were based on the general wellbeing of the world economy. First, media has been supporting the claim that immigration would improve the world economic growth. Secondly, reporting accurate immigration figures could impact the perception of the world towards immigration. Generally, the researchers concluded that immigration has more negative impacts than the ones portrayed through media.
