The Central Park Five case of 1989 will forever be embedded in our collective memories as one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in the history of the United States.
The case was between the county of New York City and five teenage boys. These boys were being prosecuted for the brutal assault and rape of a 28-year-old lady central park jogger, Trisha Meili.
No concrete evidence tied them to the scene of the crime they were being prosecuted for, but they were ultimately convicted for the crimes based on confessional statements they made. Confessions they claimed to have been traumatized and coerced by NYPD detectives into making.
The five teenagers’ convictions were later vacated in 2002 following the confession of a convicted murderer and rapist, Matias Reyes. He confessed to being the lone perpetrator of the dastardly act, and his DNA match with the samples collected at the crime scene corroborated his story.
Though exonerated and later compensated in 2014 by the city of New York for the false and malicious criminal conviction, one thing was taken from them, which they can never be compensated enough for: their lives!
Those five men’s lives were irrevocably damaged, and precisely 30 years later, it’s sad that history is about to repeat itself. Just as the then Central Park Five teenagers had their aspirations and bright future unjustly truncated, the life of Mr. Davis is about to be destroyed in like manner.
If drastic measures are not taken in time to stop yet another apparent miscarriage of justice in the state of North Carolina, the future of another innocent American, Dwayne Davis, is about to be destroyed for no just cause.
Dwayne, a resident of North Carolina, is a young footballer with a promising future. Before his wrongful arrest and prosecution for possession of drugs and two guns, he lived with his grandmother.
Dwayne was arrested by law enforcement officers of North Carolina in the company of some friends. The cops had found drugs and guns in the vicinity of the arrest and pinned it to Dwayne – when there was no evidence directly tying him to the items.
Even in the face of zero evidence implicating Dwayne Davis for the unlawful possession of arms and drugs, he was charged for illegal possession.
The evidence being used against him in the case? Nothing but a phony confessional statement!
Just like the innocent teens of the Central Park Five case were coerced by investigating officers to make false confessions that were later used to secure their indictment. Police officers of the North Carolina Police Department also forced Dwayne Davis to agree to own the guns and drugs.
With a threat, these officers were able to successfully get Dwayne to sign off a new statement that implicated him as the owner of the guns and drugs. The threat was simple: agree you own the drugs or arms, or your grandma will get roped in, arrested, and jailed.
Which loving child wouldn’t go to greater lengths to keep his aged, fragile, precious grandmother out of such unwarranted harassment and apparent life-threatening situation?
Like the police officers hadn’t already inflicted enough psychological torture on the young man, they went ahead to try and extort a car gift out of him. They offered to push for a reduced jail sentence for Dwayne if he agreed to buy a car that they’d use for undercover patrol activities.
How can police officers who swore sacred oaths to serve and protect you and I turn around to victimize us, and threaten our very existence all for selfish gains?
If this isn’t the height of corruption, wickedness, and man’s inhumanity to his fellow man, we don’t know how else to classify this. This malfeasance must stop!
The case is presently being tried in court, and we are hoping that this joke of a case will get thrown out the windows. Dwayne’s lawyer is already doing a great job of exposing the holes and illegality in the arrest and trial of his client, even as the investigating officers are singing conflicting tunes on the witness stand.
This website has been established to expose the rot in the system and to fight it. We need to come together with one voice and fight this recurring illegality before it consumes us.
Today it is Dwayne Davis. Tomorrow it could be you, a brother, a father, an uncle, a sister, a mother or a friend.
We have a single goal: fight for the unconditional release of Dwayne and every other person victimized by the very system that was designed to protect us.
The system has caused irreparable damage to the lives of the Central Park Five victims. It is trying to do the same to Dwayne Davis’s life, and it will continue to threaten you, me, our families, and our loved ones if we don’t take a decisive stand to put an end to it.
This is a wakeup call for us all to hold our hands, join our voices, and scream our lungs out: this malfeasance must stop! And if you know anyone facing such a situation similar to that of Dwayne Davis, please click here to let us know. We need to put up a fight.
An injury to one is an injury to all. Together we can stop the malfeasance – one case at a time!
