John Coltrane

Provide counter numbers for the beginnings and ends of the solos by McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane. (The order of solos in this piece is: Coltrane (melody), Tyner, and Coltrane.)

Coltrane starts playing melody after 0:18 up to 1:01 where he makes the first statement of the bridge. Tyner starts playing solo after 2:18 where Coltrane goes to rest. Tyner plays solo up to the 3:09. Coltrane plays the solo from 2:01 up to 2:18. Coltrane solos again during the bridge after 10 minutes.

Tyner plays the A section and then ″vamps″ with the pedal point in the bass before he begins to solo. A vamp is when one or two chords get repeated, usually with a pedal point. Coltrane also states the A section in his solo. Describe their solo styles

Coltrane and Tyner are unique and exciting soloists. Coltrane and Tyner have different solos based on the distinct personality they both have. Tyner is energetic, and plays various types of notes. Coltrane’s solo has quick, flowing runs in scalar patterns which was influenced by his friend Ravi Shankar, who was  an Indian raga musician.

Listen to Tyner and Coltrane phrase or create musical lines over the chord changes. Do Tyner and Coltrane solo on the chord changes of the melody? Do you recognize the modal characteristics of these solo sections? Try to include some detail.

Coltrane, and Tyner usually perform their solos on the chord changes of the melody. Slow moving harmonic rhythm and pedal points are some of the modal characteristics recognized. Pedal points created an effect known as tonic-dominant buzz, which was similar to the one used as background back up for the harmonious movements of the solo instruments in typical Indian melody.

Describe the rhythmic feel of drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Steve Davis during Coltrane′s solo. Would you describe the style of these soloists as bop, hard bop, modal, elements of all or something else? Explain in detail using what you′ve learned from the Lessons about

These particular styles.

Coltrane has a slow, and relaxed style, but Jones Steve and Johns add a different method to Coltrane’s’ music. Steve and Jones come up with a style known as bebop style; it has a magnificent temple and more rhythmic. Different types of culture influence hard bop; it brings out a new look in jazz. Bop is a type of Jazz with a high temple, and techniques, which includes creativeness.
