The Open Door Analysis

Dealing with people with special needs in society requires one to have a deep understanding of the situation. Better approaches need to be applied to enable individuals with special needs to attain a positive view of the experiences which they face. The strategy is generally vital in allowing them to be outstanding in interacting with their environments. It is also possible for them to focus on the right methodologies, which are effective in leading deserving lives and focus on the positivity, which is bound to be attained. The feature film, “The Open Door,” provides insights regarding the life of Sam, a man with special needs, who had to rely on the strong support of family and neighbors (Zambo). The film is essential in showing the importance of having a better understanding of people with special needs. It is through the process that the right strategies are applied to ease their situation. It is, therefore, possible for them to focus on the brighter aspects of life which they are exposed to. This narrative aims to analyze the film in line with its significance to special needs.

As shown in the film, people with special needs have to be shown high levels of care and appreciation. Sam’s mother and his sister Madison had a better understanding of his situation and showed him that they appreciate his presence. The practice was largely crucial in improving their situation (Zambo). They were keen to talk to Sam nicely in a way that would enable him to be outstanding in his social skills. Feeling cared for was most appropriate in making Sam show the various areas of his life, which he was good at. Therefore, the audience attains the feeling that Sam is a person who can act as normally as other people would expect.

Also, people with special needs have to receive the necessary emotional support they require, and being brought up in a home with domestic violence; the situation was less supportive of Sam. It failed to provide him the necessary stability that he needed at the time, which would enable him to survive effectively and, therefore, attain the high-qualities of life which he could achieve. Thus, his mother made the best choice to leave their father, who was both physically and emotionally abusive towards them (Zambo). She sought to provide both Sam and Madison with a stable and calm environment which they deserved. The approach was, therefore, appropriate in line with enabling them to lead lives that were desirable for them. It is through the process that Sam would manage to lead a life that was above the various challenges which he experienced at the time.

The film also shows that people with special needs, especially mental health problems, might fail to relate with the thinking of the rest of society on various issues in life. For instance, Sam was not impressed by the idea of love, which Madison was mostly interested in. He feels that the world is different from him. Therefore, he does not focus on the elements which are impressive to others. Therefore, people with special needs need to be shown that their thinking is right. They have the right to engage in the form of autonomy, especially concerning the specific thought which they engage in (Zambo). They must receive the care that they need in a bid to be outstanding in light of the engagements which they are involved with. It is through the process that they will feel the love that they are shown. They are likely to focus on the entire concept of love with the need to focus on the right measures, which would, otherwise, enable them to attain a better perception of life and the best outcomes which stand to be achieved in the process.

It also takes time for someone to have a proper understanding of an individual with special needs. As shown in the case of Roy Harrison, he sought to look beyond the negative attitude which he had developed against Sam in the beginning. Therefore, he aimed to show Sam that he considered him to be a human being who is worth being cared for. Hence, he must focus on the good treatment he receives. Taking the time to learn about the situation and challenges of an individual with special needs is essential in enabling them to feel comfortable around their environment (Zambo). The best approach is shown where Harrison and the congregants in the church were supportive of Sam in his situation. They understood his condition and, therefore, sought to enable Sam to have the ease of going about his activities. Therefore, there is the chance of allowing people with special needs to attain the feeling that they are well-taken care of as the rest of society becomes involved in their situation. It is mainly interested in making them feel acknowledged concerning the engagements which they are involved with. Through the process, people with special needs can have the ability to lead impressive lives.

To sum up, the film, “The Open Door” shows that people with special needs have to be shown a significant level of care. As shown in the case of Sam, he received high levels of care from his mother, sister Madison, and Harrison. The care was essential in enabling him to identify with his situation and, therefore, attain the view that other people were mostly interested in him. The approach was crucial in allowing him to look beyond challenges which he experienced at the time. Also, the film shows that people with special needs have to be given a significant level of understanding. The approach is vital in enabling them to have ease in engaging in the specific activities which they are involved with. They can focus on the right approaches, which are generally necessary to them and improve their qualities of life.
