Walt Disney continually evoked anti-hunting feelings
Growing up, Walt Disney continually evoked anti-hunting feelings. Animals in cartoons and movies were depicted as innocent and gentle incapable of causing any trouble. The day to day interaction which white-tailed deer in Texas has brought up the question; are animals are innocent? Also, should the hunting of these deers be viewed as cruel and against human rights? The answer to these questions is a definite no. White-tail deers in Texas are a threat to the environment, themselves, and to humans mainly because of their huge population. Because of this reason, white-tailed deer hunting should be accepted as the only sustainable method of controlling their increased populations in addition to avoiding the negative impact of overpopulation.
The current multiplication of white-tailed deer in addition to them being capable of existing close to human beings possesses a challenge, an opportunity, and even a threat. The population of Whitetail deer in the United States is approximately twenty-five million with Texas hosting close to four million of them. A few years back, the Buck Law was passed which attempted to stop hunters from killing so many deer. Because of these restricted laws, the population of deer increased quickly although there was enormous destruction to crops. With time the Buck Law became ineffective.
In North Texas farmers lose increased amounts of crops because of the whitetail deer. It is almost impossible to keep them away from crops. A year ago, I found a whitetail deer in my neighbor’s house while visiting them. As the police struggled to get it out, it caused destruction worth $500 before it eventually ran through the door. What’s more, is that these animals move to the city and cause destruction of more landscape that is very costly. For example, when the white-tail deer enter the city, it consumes flowers planted by humans which have been sprayed with pesticides. As a result, they end up destroying the flower and at the same time becoming sick from the toxins consumed.
Animals can alter the entire ecosystem when they become too many that they destroy vegetation in an area. With the huge population, the ecosystem is incapable of supporting them. So, diseases, as well as mass starvation, overcome the population. Therefore the animals have no choice but to seek another habitat fit for them. This is when they become a threat to people as seen in Texas. A whitetail deer crossing a highway often causes drivers to swerve off the road, a dangerous act that can cause death. Besides, hungry white tail deer in search of food have been reported to attack campers and hikers.
Because of all these reasons, hunting is a good management tool in controlling the white tail deer population in Texas. It is a safe and human way of keeping the ecosystem balanced. Critics of hunting argue that another course of action such as sterilization or transporting the animals to other places is more effective when compared to hunting. Yet, such techniques are very costly and have minimal chances of success. Although those against hunting don’t have to agree with it, they must view it as the most cost-effective and successful way of controlling the white tail deer population.
To conclude, the white-tail deer ought to be hunted when the hunting season is on. They should be hunted for meat as well as a sport. For many people, hunting is a livelihood, it is what makes them men. That said, hunting the white-tail deer is helpful to both humans and themselves. Hunters help these animals as opposed to the popular opinion of killing them.
