In The Mood for Love

This movie was directed by Wong Kar-Wai in the year 2000. It represented the story of a man and a woman who are married, but their spouses have affairs with each other. The storyline of the movie is about adultery that is in China, and it covers the year 1962. The main actors of the movie are Mrs Chan which was played by Maggie Cheung and Mr. Chow played by Tony Leung. They are acting together with their couples which make it a movie between two couples. This movie is a story of romantic idealism where the main characters’ couples are having a sexual affair which makes Mrs. Chan and Mr Chow develop feelings for each other.

Wong Kar-Wai directs the movie to the moody period drama which had unrequited love. The movie is set in Shanghaiese enclave located in Hong Kong. Wong was born in the year 1958 in Shanghai, and his family migrated to Hong Kong in the year 1963. The early experiences if Wong Kar-Wai left an impression that motivated him to venture into the film industry as a director.Wong studied graphic design at the Polytechnic of Hong Kong and later joined another course on prospective production designers and director of TVB television networks. He later started screenwriting which developed his skills in film production and directing. In this movie, he uses a simple storyline where a man and a woman who are abandoned by their mates meet and live together. The man and woman in the movie later realize that their mates are having an affair which makes them angry and hurt. This enhances their friendship, but they do not involve themselves in a sexual affair like their mates.

The main actors of the movie are Mr. and Mrs. Chan and Mr. and Mrs. Chow. The two couples meet where they rent a room in neighboring flats and each couple move in their rooms. Due to the adjacent neighborhood, the two couples become friends to each other. Since Mrs. Chow and Mr. Chan, both work leaving their spouses indoors. Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow suspect that their couples had extramarital activities while in their jobs and this makes their friendship strengthen because they are suffering from the same suspicion. This was strengthened by the fact that they both stay indoors which makes them lonely. Despite knowing that their partners Mrs. Chow and Mr. Chan are having affairs, they agree to avoid sexual relationship so that they avoid the wrongs that were done by their couples.

The movie In the Mood of Love reveals the themes of loneliness and hurt desire, happiness, regrets and indecision. This is where the characters in the movie act as victims of circumstances. Adultery, as depicted in the movie, is as a result of feelings and desire that are developed after Mrs. Chow and Mr. Chan find that they are both working outside the town. Since they spent their time outside their living premises makes them engage in a sexual affair. Loneliness and hurt are the driving factors to the enhanced friendship between Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow. The film is aimed at creating the real picture of China during 1962 where families engaged in adultery as a way to seek happiness and to avoid loneliness. The opinions of people towards the movie include romance and unfaithfulness that was there in China during that period.
