Meaning of Life

                                                             Introduction

Several arguments support or oppose God’s existence. The biblical understanding of God is dependent on the concept of the Creator’s freedom. God is perceived as having the authority to break the causal chain or suspend the natural order through miracles. As a result, theologians have attempted to explain God’s existence. This paper explores the concept of God’s existence by looking at the meaning of life in the absence of God. It also looks at how life would be without objective meaning.

Meaning of life without God

Naturally, human beings seek meaning and purpose in life. The primary concern is whether life can have any meaning in the absence of God. It is important to understand what we refer to when we state the “meaning of life.” The life of a human being can have meaning that is bestowed from the outside. This is known as objective, compared to subjective meaning. Alternatively, the life of human beings could possess a meaning that usually comes from within, which includes self-determined and self-ascribed meaning.

Under the view of Christians, it is easy to perceive how our life in general and personal human lives, would possess an objective meaning. The life of human beings could possess a purpose that is revealed and defined by God (Craig, 2000). The primary role of a man is glorifying our Creator and enjoy His presence forever. Further, the lives of humans would possess significance as part of God’s sovereign and wise plan for His creation. Since we are made in God’s image, we are designed to commune with one another and our God.  As a result, our lives would possess substantial value.

In the absence of God, live entirely lacks meaning. This is explained by the fact that we are specks that exists for a short period in an immense and long-lived universe (Craig, 2000). In the absence of God, human life lacks meaning as we are deprived of ultimate cosmic significance (Swinburne, 2004). It is also explained that in the absence of God, and even when the life of humans could appear meaningful in the universe’s frame, it would eventually be meaningless since the universe is also found to be pointless.

Could life be “good” without objective meaning?

In the absence of objective meaning, human beings would still merely be identified as unintended nature accidents and a product of a blind chance.  Therefore, it is evident that there could be no rationale for why we live at all. Consequently, even when we may be classified as immortal, human life would merely lack any substantial purpose if we lacked objective meaning (Habermas, 2008). The absence of objective meaning is associated with a lack of God. Therefore, life would not be any good in such a situation.

Conclusions

The problem of evil includes the challenges experienced in reconciling belief primarily in an omnibenevolent, omnipotent, and omniscient God. This occurs in the existence of suffering and evil across the world (Rea, 2014). The existence of God shows that He is powerful, good, and knowledgeable. Human beings should recognize the power that God possesses has above everything. He has control over the evil acts that humans commit and seeks to liberate humans from the problem (Thomas, 2018). We should understand that God knows everything, and He understands our mistakes. The goodness of God shapes the life of humans. He shows mercy even when we commit evil acts. God’s existence is debated based on popular culture and religion. The arguments try to depict that we can potentially conclude God’s existence, especially from God’s definition.
