Nurse – FPX -5b

The healthcare environment provides numerous learning opportunities for nurses to enhance their professional growth, including leadership skills. Nurses can also use artifacts to improve various processes and quality. Artifacts can exemplify the core nursing standards and values, and therefore, help care providers improve their practice. The Improvement Plan In-Service is one of the artifacts that has contributed to my personal growth in terms of providing nursing services and undertaking leadership responsibilities.

Competency 1: Lead People and Processes

The Improvement Plan In-Service provided crucial information related to safety improvements of mothers during birth to lessen maternal hemorrhage and associated deaths. This in-service training fostered my safety skills in relation to the provision of care. I become more aware of my role in the healthcare setting. I have learned that the quality of services in the hospital setting is not about providing services, but also entails leading patients and collaborating with other care providers. The in-service provided the opportunity to interact and exchange information, consequently enhancing my leadership growth. Research shows that some nurses use cognitive artifacts by interacting and exchanging information to improve the quality of services (Blaz et al., 2016). In general, the in-service influenced the way I interact with mothers and provide services positively.

Competency 3: Transform Processes to Improve Quality

Understanding various processes and improving quality form the core of the nursing practice. Nurses must understand the relationship between multiple processes to improve quality. In essence, the objective of in-service was to improve the safety of mothers. Maternal death increases yearly, and the leading cause is obstetric hemorrhage. Therefore, I have learned to anticipate the likelihood of maternal hemorrhage and prepare to respond (Atallah & Goffman, 2020). In the last three months, I have developed a cultural awareness of safety, particularly in the maternity setting. For instance, I have learned to communicate errors timely to come up with an effective action plan. Overall, I have learned to transform processes and improve quality by anticipating errors and challenges. The in-service taught me that an obstetric hemorrhage could occur unexpectedly, and therefore, there is a need to plan.

Competency 6: Collaborating Inter-professionally

Nurses must recognize the importance of collaboration and forming interdisciplinary teams to improve the outcomes of the population. The in-serve taught me the essence of multi-disciplinary collaboration. I have learned that nurses must work as a team to recognize an obstetric hemorrhage, take action, and plan on the follow-up. Therefore, collaboration is useful in reducing maternal hemorrhage, as Simonazzi et al. (2016) clarify that nurses should continually communicate with each other to minimize potential errors. Interdisciplinary is successful if there are effective communication channels to share information and receive prompt feedback. I have learned that Interprofessional communication is a process that requires team members to fulfill their mandate. Inter-professional communication involves the participation of different actors in the health setting. In general, I have developed a sense of cooperation, teamwork, and diversity by collaborating with other nurses (Morley & Cashell, 2017).

Competency 8: Integrate Professional Standards and Values

Safety and prompt feedback, particularly in the context of maternal health care anchored in professional standards, am trained to exhibit professionalism and values in my mandate. The in-service illustrates that health care facilities must also foster the nursing practice and values by investing in safety improvement plans. Besides improvement plans, I have nurtured a culture of safety and quality. For instance, I have learned to anticipate complications and to develop a contingency plan to prevent adverse consequences in maternal care. A nurse, for example, must have adequate time with patients as a sign of respect for human dignity. My priority as a nurse is to protect patients and team members. Overall, the in-service has taught me to apply nursing standards to enhance my professional practice and improve quality.
