Garment Decoration Methods

Introduction

There are many decoration techniques that you can pick to decorate your intended custom apparel or merchandise. The important factors to consider when selecting a method include:

  1. Colour of the apparel and design
  2. The desired finishing
  3. The number of apparel you want to decorate.

Below are the common garment decoration methods with their advantages and disadvantages:

  1. Embroidery

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply to yarn or thread. One can also incorporate pearls, beads, sequins, and quills during embroidery. There are different types of embroidery.

The main types are surface, also known as free embroidery, counted embroidery, and needlepoint. The embroidery quality depends on the quality of the fabric, threads, the closeness of the stitches, and colour combinations. Embroidery is best suited for natural fabrics with a tight weave like linen, cotton, silk, and wool.

Pros

  1. a) Embroidery is very long-lasting; hence its’ durability is an advantage.
  2. b) Embroidery thread retains colour hence colour sharpness remains the same over a long time.
  3. c) It allows for the incorporation of many colors in one design at no extra cost.
  4. d) Custom embroidery is helpful for the creation of logos on garments.

Cons

  1. a) Not all designs are suited to embroidery. Small and intricate designs and very large designs can be complex to do with embroidery.
  2. b) Embroidery cannot produce gradients and subtle shades, as well as other methods.
  3. c) It can cause compromise to waterproof materials.

  1. Sublimation Print

Sublimation print is a printing technique that transfers a design into a fabric using heat and ink. After choosing a design, one uses a sublimation printer to print it out to a special paper. The design is then printed onto the fabric by using a heat press. Sublimation can be done on materials such as nylon and polyester fabrics.

Pros

  1. a) The method offers a lot of freedom, unlike other methods. One can print an array of images or words in whatever design they like without much restriction.
  2. b) Sublimation print offers great longevity of the design. Even after washing several times, the design does not crack nor fade, which is a great plus point.
  3. c) Sublimation printing is suitable for garments with a large design variation.

Cons

  1. a) It is only suitable for garments that include polyester.
  2. b) The sublimation printing process is slow as it involves printing a transfer paper, and each item is pressed individually.
  3. c) It can only be done on white fabrics.

  1. Digital Transfer Prints

A reverse image of a graphic is printed onto a special heat transfer paper using a computer printer in this decoration method. The transfer is then placed on top of the fabric, and the ink is thermally transferred from the paper to your fabric using heat and pressure. Digital transfer is a way of producing full-color designs that are too complex to be screen printed.

Pros

  1. a) This method is simple and easy to use by people with no prior experience. It is easy to learn how to use a heat press machine.
  2. b) The machine can print complex, vivid, and full-color pictures in excellent resolution hence offering high-quality finish products.
  3. c) Digital transfer printing is much more affordable, especially if you are looking to print smaller fabric units.

Cons

  1. a) It is not suitable for large quantity orders because the process takes time.
  2. b) The print is not as durable as other methods.
  3. c) It is quite difficult to reproduce the colour white within the print.

  1. CAD Cut Transfers

This type of decoration method uses a unique vinyl material specially cut and then printed onto the clothing using a heat press. A vinyl transfer substrate is mounted onto a carrier substrate. The transfer design is then cut out using a vinyl cutter, and the excess vinyl is stripped away.

The garment is placed on the heat press, the transfer is positioned on the garment, and the heat and pressure are applied. If the transfer consists of more than one colour, the same process is repeated for each subsequent colour.

Pros

  1. a) It gives a durable finish
  2. b) It is easy to add letters and numbers to an existing printed garment
  3. c) It gives a gloss or matte finish
  4. d) It can be used on any colour.

Cons

  1. a) Each design must be cut individually, especially for vinyl transfers.
  2. b) It is not versatile for printing on different kinds of material

c). It is only practical for a smaller quantity.

  1. d) Direct ironing and prints cause damage to the image.

  1. Direct To Garment Printing

Direct To garment is a printing method that uses specialized aqueous inkjet technology. The printers have a platen that holds the garment in place as the print head sprays printer inks on the textiles. This method requires that the garment be pre-treated to allow a strong bond between the garment fibers and pigmented inks, laying down loose fibers to provide a smoother substrate and promoting drying and curing.

The inks in this type of printer are water-based; hence they work best for printing on natural fibers like cotton, hemp, and linen.

Pros

  1. a) It is available for both mass production and short production runs
  2. b) Works on coloured garments as well
  3. c) This method can be used for detailed and broad designs
  4. d) It provides accurate reproduction and high-quality results
  5. c) It is water-based; this makes it eco-friendly.

Cons

  1. a) It is limited to natural fibers
  2. b) It can be a little slower, due to the pretreatment process
  3. c) It has a limited design placement, and can be complex with unique designs
  4. d) It is not cost-effective for mass production.
  5. Screen Printing

The screen printing is a method that involves using a woven mesh screen to support an ink-blocking stencil to receive a desired image. The screen stencil will form open areas of mesh that transfer ink by pressing through the mesh onto a substrate.

Different ink colours are applied using different screen stencil to create a final printed effect. The stencil makes other parts that do not require printing impermeable.

Pros

  1. a) It is extremely cost-efficient hence an effective solution for bulk printing.
  2. b) It is easy to print on specified areas of the print material
  3. c) The prints are durable on the long term
  4. d) It provides a higher quality output than digital prints

Cons

  1. a) It has a much higher initial set up cost than digital printing and takes more time.
  2. b) The design cannot be customized in the manner of digital printing.
  3. c) It has limited colour ranges available
  4. d) The overall quality of images is not as effective

Conclusion

Garment decoration requires creativity and skill for excellent results on the garments you are decorating. Basic knowledge of the different methods will significantly help you. Ensure you choose a method that is within your budget, labour, and suits your garment’s fabric.
