An Ineffective Scope Statement
Introduction
A scope statement provides details on the entire project, like information on deliverables, including their characteristics, key stakeholders, and their impact on the project. Notably, the project’s objectives are useful in the scope statement (Mirza et al. 2013). It is crucial to project managers since it provides insight into the repercussions, constraints, and assumptions in a particular work. However, companies can implement an ineffective scope statement resulting in unsuccessful projects. The paper highlights the impact of an ineffective scope statement.
Characteristics
An ineffective scope statement does not consider the types of deliverables that differentiate in scope and scope. Ideally, it does not list deliverables and the conditions concerning the project. Training and development deliverables are crucial since they improve the roles and responsibilities of each employee, which results in the success of a project (Mirza et al. 2013). An ineffectual scope statement does not counter check completed tasks and the in-scope deliverables, ensuring all jobs are accomplished. It also ignores shareholders’ considerations. It fails to capture the suggestions that stakeholders highlight, which is useful in annual meetings.
An ineffective scope statement fails to utilize various tools like project definition rating index (PDRI). This tool is essential since it analyzes the performance of a project (Banda et al. 2016; Mirza et al. 2013). Additionally, an unreliable scope statement ignores guidelines that are useful in the management and alteration policies that prevent efficiency in projects. An ineffective scope does not recognize project drivers like legal requirements and safety concerns.
Consequences
An ineffective scope statement provides wrong details in expenses relating to the percentage of the original budget. Contextually, it exposes managers to a hard time tracing hidden costs, which occur as overheads, resulting in high prices (Banda et al. 2016). Projects that incur significant expenses undermine the prevalent cash budget hence resulting in stagnation. High costs also discourage shareholders who play a major role in projects since they provide financing sources.
An inaccurate project statement affects the time and quality of a project. Incorporating wrong objectives steer principles that are not conducive to a specific project. Poor communication that emanates from poor planning processes evident in an ineffective scope statement derails project operations. With labor shortages, project manager fails to implement some crucial tasks, therefore, affecting the quality of a scheme (Mirza et al. 2013). Untimely executions and poor objectives undermine project development.
Another consequence of poorly formulated scope statements entails a lack of customer satisfaction. Implementing an ineffective scope statement leads to undesirable deliverables. According to software development professionals, a project ought to provide the required functions that fulfill customer expectations. When a scope does to advance the speculated impacts, it affects the morale of customers leading to project failure.
Personal Experience
When I was given a role as a supervisor in a construction site, the project manager had an ineffective scope statement. More so, the manager did not implement a risk assessment analysis that could identify uncertainties. Eventually, obstacles like cost overruns and improper time management led to poor quality infrastructure. With high maintenance costs that were not projected in the budget, the project was deemed to fail.
Conclusion
Indeed, implementing an incorrect scope statement affects deliverables, objectives, and justification. For project success, managers should analyze time, cost, quality, and customers before enacting a scope statement.
