Cancer Awareness Campaign in Virginia Beach

Introduction

Cancer is the number one killer disease in Virginia Beach. Many people, young and old, rich and poor, have in one way or another interacted with cancer in their families. Many governmental organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations have conducted numerous campaigns aimed at creating awareness about and eradicating cancer from society. The American Cancer Society Virginia, for example, has organized multiple campaigns, events, and marathons to sensitize people and to collect funds necessary for their course. They have also developed over six hundred resources aiming towards creating awareness on the effect of cancer on society. A cancer awareness campaign generally has some impact on the ecology of culture. This essay talks about the effects of a cancer awareness campaign on the various ecological models of society.

Societal effects

My cancer awareness campaign will be targeting the general public. Cancer has for a long time been a thorn to the population of Virginia, and specifically Virginia Beach. The state and federal governments have put concerted efforts to control possible carcinogenic elements in the region. Some Non-Governmental Organizations have also joined in the fight against cancer. Some of these organizations include American Cancer Society Virginia, Pancreatic Cancer Network, Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater, and Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. America Cancer Society Virginia has organized several marathons and events to sensitize people from cancer problems.

Community effects

Cancer has had unfathomable impacts in the communities around Virginia. Many children have been left without parents, and many parents have lost their children to cancer. Cancer awareness program is, therefore, a program which the whole community is supporting. Local NGOs and CBOs have also joined to fight cancer. Both private and public hospitals have also participated in the fight against cancer since they are directly affected by the disease.

Institutional effects

The local school, colleges, churches, and hospitals are all part of this campaign. Cancer is a societal problem which has so far affected many people in the local population. Many people in the state of Virginia are affected with cancer and are therefore called upon in this campaign. Virginia Beach Middle School, Virginia Beach Elementary School, Shelton Park Elementary school among other schools have chosen to be part of this campaign. The First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach is also part of this cancer awareness campaign.

Interpersonal and personal effects

Many families, mine included have been directly or indirectly affected with cancer. It is for this reason that we have decided to create local groups in fighting the darkness caused by disease in our lives. Local families, church members, and patients have formed informal groups geared towards combating cancer. Some schools have also come up with cancer clubs that help create awareness on cancer since many students have ailing parents or they are suffering from the disease. Virginia Oncology Associates and Lung Force are just two of the professional groups that have come out to help in the fight against cancer.

Conclusion

Fighting cancer has been very challenging because of a number of reasons, one of them being varied types of cancers that affect people. Another reason for the difficulty in fighting cancer is because no exact cause has been identified to be responsible for cancer. Our only hope is coming together and fight cancer.
