Adoption by Gay Couples
Both Becky and Tom have clear views on whether couples of the same sex should be allowed to adopt children. The topic has been on discussion for a long time with different people having different views. Becoming adoptive parents is a challenging transition that requires a significant level of adjustment to the couple (Messina and D’Amore, 2016). Studies suggest that it is even harder for same-sex couples because of the intersection of adoptive and sexual minority status. They indicate that emotional conflicts and self-incertitude characterize the transition for the sexual minorities.
In my view, adoption for same-sex couples should be allowed. First, that would be part of providing equal rights to all citizens. Civilized societies should not discriminate based on race, creed, gender, or sexuality. Couples of the same sex deserve adopting rights equal to other couples. Anything different from that should be termed as pure inequality based on homophobia. Some countries have gone to the extent of allowing gay individuals to adopt and denying gay couples the right. Under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ‘all are equal before the law and everyone is entitled to protection against any discrimination.’
Secondly, there has been enough evidence showing that gay couples can also be good at parenting just as straight couples. I even believe some gay couples could make better parents since they always choose to have children, unlike other straight couples who stumble into parenthood by accident. Many gay couples even have more stable relationships than many straight couples, ensuring a secure and emotionally stable home for the adopted children. Thirdly, allowing gay couples to adopt children would be of much help to the kids. Many of them are from poor countries and live in orphanages or foster homes. With the shortage of qualified straight couples, gay adoption would be of much help to the children. Sixty-five thousand children have found homes in the United States thanks to the gay adoption legislation. Lastly, the diversity will strengthen the society when gay couples are allowed to adopt. Surveys have shown that children raised by gay couples grow up more tolerant and open-minded.
