The two subdivisions of the nervous system

The peripheral and the central nervous systems are the two main subdivisions of the nervous system. The ganglia and nerves are the composites of the PNS. Nerves are a collection of nerve fibres, while ganglia are nerve cells outside the CNS. It is further classified into efferent (motor) and afferent (sensory) divisions. The sensory system relays the stimulus to CNS from the peripheral organs. On the other hand, the efferent division causes a reaction in peripheral organs, as it conveys the CNS’s impulses. The CNS is comprised of the spinal cord and brain organs. The brain manages our speech and memory, thoughts and coordinates the legs and arms movements while the spinal cord provides the pathway, which conveys the messages sent from the brain to the body and vice versa.

What things in your life trigger the “fight or flight” subdivision – how do you know?

Several factors trigger the flight or fight responses in the human body, such as stress, hunger, toxic relationships, and childhood traumas. In my case, stress and toxic relationships are the main causes of flight or fight responses. When subjected to compromising situations physically or emotionally due to romantic relationships, I usually experience feelings of anger and physical revenge, such as breaking mirrors or electronic gadgets. The breathing rate and heartbeat increase for about two minutes before the body returns to its pre-arousal state. Besides, I refrain from social interactions with my friends and find solitude in watching movies and listening to music until the stress is resolved.

Recommendation on how to “rest and digest” during stress

The parasympathetic system allows the body to remain calm and improves digestive and immune system functionality (Pearson). It improves long-term physical and emotional health. I would recommend that someone going through an acute stress to talk about it with a therapist or a trustworthy and compassionate person. It helps to reduce anxiety, and as scholars say, it solves the problem halfway. Besides, you should engage in other activities, which involve having fun, contrary to delving into the stressful activity.
