Production of Ethylene
Ethylene is considered the largest amongst the olefin markets and forms the most vital monomer created petrochemically (Alshammari et al., 2016). It is used to produce different commercial essential chemical products like polymers, polythene, and fibers when applied as a feedstock. The UAE and Gulf economy’s backbone is mainly the oil and gas industry, but the petrochemical firm is still young, having been pioneered in 2002. The petrochemical cluster and the linked converter present a chance to reinforce economic diversification that requires collaboration, demand clusters, and liberal approach development towards petrochemical firms development, government, and foreign investors. The paper discusses the application and significance of ethylene within the UAE and the Gulf region.
Application
Ethylene is an essential raw material used to produce various polymers and chemicals. EthylenE generates polymers such as poly(phenylene), ethylbenzene, polychloroethene, and polythenes. Other chemicals derived from the product include ethanol and the diols like ethane-1,2-diol.
In UAE (Abu Dhabi), Borouge awarded an ethylene plant project to Parsons and Bechtel companies to create linear-low and high densities polyethylene. This establishment is regarded as the only producer of bimodal polyethylene within the whole Middle East. This plant employs the Borealis’ Borstar PE technology systems (Ruwais, 1999). Another state-owned firn producing petrochemical include the ADNOC, considered as the giant of polymers in the UAE. The pipes made from bimodal polyethylene are durable, strong, malleable, and are cost effective. Saudi Arabia has three ethylene cracker projects via Saudi Aramco, dow chemical, and Petrorabigh companies (ICIS, 2010). All these projects for the new crackers also rely on naphtha as the feedstock. Additionally, the use of Borstar technology ensures facilitates the production of thinner pipes and larger pipes, of 1600mm diameters, which are – two and a half times larger than conventional pipes (Ruwait, 1999). Overall, the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) is the Arabian Gulf’s chemical industry voice.
In the Gulf region, ethylene is used as a feedstock. It is the main building block for the petrochemical industries. The primary feedstock applied in the gulf and Europe regions is naphtha generated from refineries. The product provides increased proportions of products such as butadiene and propylene. According to Arabian Business (2009), the high-density polyethylene from the gulf countries is used to inject and blow mould applications like drums, caps, containers, pallets, and household items.
Conclusion
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), countries comprising Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Uae, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, have benefited from the low-cost exportation and cost economics associated with petrochemical products ethylene. The commodities have continued to increase within the Asian markets, supporting the production of numerous polymers and poly(polyethylene) products. The GCC, unlike other petrochemical generating regions, is located on a small market. It is located near the Asia and Europe borders since it depends on the supply chain.
