Charismatic Leadership
Charismatic leadership, also known as transformational leadership, involves a style of authority where the leader’s personality defines the approach of leadership. The leader’s positive qualities influence the type of leadership. Charismatic leaders are highly skilled communicators who are eloquent and can communicate with their followers at an emotional level and are by their commitment and convictions.
Various characteristics are associated with charismatic leadership. Firstly, charismatic leaders have exceptional communication and listening skills, motivate their followers, and support them when things are good and in tough times. According to Epley (2015), leaders also communicate with each other in a group setting. Secondly, leaders show humility. They value every follower and carefully listen to their issues. Additionally, charismatic leaders self-monitor themselves. They usually watch over themselves as well as their followers. Therefore, the leaders believe that their followers copy their actions and strive to portray the right image to their subjects.
Charismatic leaders empower their followers by expressing conviction on their ability to perform at a higher level. Such leaders also demonstrate determination and confidence among followers. Since there is good communication in charismatic leadership, the relationship between the leaders and followers is enhanced. Communication is critical towards improving relations among individuals. The followers have an appropriate channel to reach the leader, making them closer. Moreover, charismatic leaders work together with the followers leading to close relations between the leader and followers as they interact in the course of working together. Nikoloski (2015) postulates that, in charismatic leadership, the leader respects the follower’s freedom, thus creating a strong bond as the subjects are free to express themselves freely.
In brief, charismatic leadership is an essential source of competitive advantage for small and medium enterprises. It ensures high productivity from the workers since it creates comfortable working conditions. Different organizations should employ a charismatic leadership style to motivate the workers to achieve the goals and work freely with them.
