Chinese Americans view affirmative action and pro 16 from a personal standpoint. Pervasive racial prejudices persist in the United States, particularly among minority groups. The middle and upper-class Chinese Immigrants settle around the Chinese dominated residential areas as well as the white’s neighbourhoods. Therefore, they have limited interactions with other minorities. Consequently, racial prejudices fuel negative attitudes towards affirmative action and pro 16. Discrimination and favouritism of whites influence Asian Americans’ attitudes towards negating the affirmation action and pro 16. Johnston-Guerrero and Zhao posit that Asian Americans were perceived to be marginalized, driven by specific racial and ethnic minorities (19). Therefore, similar to the Chinese immigrant attitudes, Asian Americans negatively perceived affirmative and pro 16.
Asian Americans define affirmative action as a measure of discriminatory practice, which failed to consider the national origin, sex and ethnicity. They perceive affirmative action as one that violates the values of individualism. According to Chin, Asian Americans believe that attitudes towards affirmative action and pro 16 are influenced by demographic characteristics, personal beliefs and ethnic identity (73). Besides, generational differences have greatly influenced such attitudes in that persons tend to choose careers based on racial prejudice, pressure, culture or even values. Asian Americans view CA pro 16 as one that will restore affirmative action’s aptitude to address matters of inequality in various institutions. The Asian Americans claimed to dismantle race-based admission procedures in educational institutions and equal treatment of the immigrants. Moreover, they came up with laws that prohibit discriminatory actions based on ethnicity and sex. Therefore, their attributes determine the perception of affirmative action.
