Nature symbolism in Robert Frosts Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening

Introduction

Robert frost is  an Americas best poet well known for one of his best poems, ‘stopping by woods on a snowy evening.’ Frost paints the picture of a person going out of town and stops in the woods on his horse. He stops for a while to appreciate nature as the wonder of the world he spends time in but not enjoying it before. There was a frozen lake and no farmhouse within, and the horse shook its bell, wondering if they had lost their way. The writer brings out a clear picture of a traveler on a horse in the windy evening and the use of symbolism to bring out the meaning of the poem.

The writer’s love for nature is shown in the poem sets ‘stopping by the woods on a snowy evening’ it is evident that the setting is in the woods but not like any other kind. Frost expresses the woods as a special place that attracted attention. We associate with the attitude of ‘personal paradise’ (Tyagi 28-29). The peace, tranquility, and silence are all the aspects of ‘paradise’ These features enable the speaker to avoid reality. Snow symbolizes the peace that the speaker feels when in the woods that cannot be found somewhere else in the outside world.

The darkness symbolizes various things, people associate darkness associated with evil or danger, but in this poem, darkness represents an atmosphere with no disturbance( Han 1). It also brings out the mystery and the secrets in the woods that have not yet been discovered .the silence in the woods brings about the feeling of being away from reality ‘ The darkest evening of the year’ Stopping inside the woods gives the speaker escape from reality temporarily. Frost does not provide details on the business of the speaker. Still, it may be stressful that he needed to escape from reality. ‘the woods are lovely, dark, and deep ‘The escape from reality is essential even in this era. Frost wrote the poem in 1923, yet it addresses issues of 20th-century society.

Frost expresses that the speaker knows that he cannot escape ‘paradise’ ‘But I have a promise to keep.’ He does not want to leave the woods, but we must keep some promises. ‘miles to go before I sleep’ is repeated twice in the poem to emphasize the significance of the contract created and stress that the speaker has to leave. The woods symbolize some things that are difficult to describe. Items that are mysterious, beautiful, and transcendent causes one to stop and be amazed by the beauty. We can elaborate that it is not the sight of ‘woods on a snowy evening’ that matters but the experience.

Conclusion

In conclusion can agree that frost uses symbolism, both literal and dictionary, in writing the poem. Symbolism gives the inner meaning of the poem. The woods symbolize the beauty and mystery of the world we live in today that most people are too busy to appreciate.
