Behavioral Problems in Adolescents

Adolescents are young children transitioning from childhood to adulthood. The period of transition is known as adolescence. Adolescents transform physically and psychologically. During this period, a lot is witnessed as teens try to identify themselves. They may face behavioral problems like peer pressure, anxiety, alcoholism as they try to gain their independence and identity (Corchado, & Martínez-Arias, 2020).  These behavioral problems will be discussed, and communication strategies will be identified that help foster therapeutic relationships.

Anxiety and depression in teenagers is a common trend in society today. A lot is happening around them, and without proper guidance, adolescents do not know how to deal with these issues. Sexual abuse, loss of parents, and separation of parents are some of the things that can cause depression among adolescents (Corchado & Martínez-Arias, 2020).

Peer pressure is another significant issue that causes behavioral problems among adolescents. Teenagers engage in activities that they should not because they want to fit in a certain group or are introduced by their peers. Some of the things teenagers do know it’s wrong, but because they do not want to look odd, they do them. Alcohol and drug abuse is one example. When teens start abusing drugs, their behaviors change, and they can begin stealing from their parents and others to make sure they afford the drugs.

The community and parents can come up with communication strategies to help adolescents during adolescence. Parents should be open to regular communication with their teens to make sure that everything is going well (Cui, Graber, Metz, et al. 2016). Listening to teenagers helps as parents know the issues they are going through and know what to do to help. The creation of awareness can also help teenagers avoid some things they do without knowing the consequences. Awareness of drug abuse and sexuality are examples of adolescents’ need to know for them to make the right decisions. Awareness can be created through seminars, counseling, retreats, and camping activities. All these are examples of strategies that can help foster therapeutic relationships between teenagers and society.

When teenagers are given the right guidance from an early age, they can make the right decisions for themselves. Therefore, the community needs to come together and deal with problems that affect teenagers. Parents can monitor the kind of friends their children have, and if they think they are not a good influence on their children, they should advise their children to stop their friendship.
