The Art of Report Writing
An Assessment of the First Statement
The art of writing a well-structured report demands one to have the desired form and content of the said report at their fingertips. With this in mind, saying that, “Writing a report that is concise and yet complete is virtually impossible because these two objectives are conflicting,” is not true. A morphological deconstruction of the above statement foregrounds the words concise and complete. A concise report is harsh in terms of time management (Varghese, 2020). It goes to the point with clear cut motive and does not beat around the bush. A complete report, on the other hand, has all its needed content with all the supporting materials well elaborated on in the narrative (Word Counter, 2017). It is possible to have a report that is both concise and complete. A report can be clear cut and to the point, and yet still go to lengths to ensure its content has been fully explored and therefore easier to understand and discuss.
The process of creating a report that is both concise and complete can take many paths. Among these are eradicating filler words and content not needed in the work (Herman, 2014). If the writer takes their time to examine and eliminate words such as ‘that,’ the report ends up being more compact, less wordy, and thus a step near being concise (Tracey et al., 2019). A report can still retain its completeness with just a few words that well encapsulate the entirety of its message.
An Assessment of the Second Statement
Beauty in expression has been at the forefront of human endeavors for generations. The classical era where the greats of Greece like Plato, Aristophanes, and Aristotle walked in art and science, living timeless pieces that shape our world today, to the neo-classical age where Shakespeare and da Vinci wowed the world with awing strides in both art and science. To the modern age where Picasso, Stephen King, and Einstein have revolutionized our understanding of the world around us, there has never been a shortage of beauty in expressing oneself (Livingston, 2012). Expression takes many forms, from the written art to the sung, drawn, and sculpted (Börjesson, 2016). It can assume the form of science, or that of religion, or politics. And it surrounds man’s every activity. With this, it is plausible to say all facets of writing, reports included, are art, and as such, presenting and reading reports should be considered as an art as well.
There are many views in support of this thought. All kinds of writing are art (Tracey et al., 2019). Human creation is born of creativity, and it is meant to be a thesis or anti-thesis of the world around us (Gravett, 1998). Those of the Hellenistic era viewed creativity as a mirror and a voice to the society, and as writing is a form of creativity, by extension, it becomes art.
