I chose the role of the institution review board chair. On the course, I made two unethical choices where one was going direct to the research assistant to gather information about the research coordinated instead of asking the principal investigator of the report. The second choice I made is influencing the board to replace the research coordinator due to falsification (The Research Clinic, n.d). I learnt that making the choices without consultation and intense review can lead to the study failure and affecting those conducting the study. . I also learnt that it is better to use the right channel to seek information by eliminating assumptions to avoid making a rash decision. Ensuring effective decisions is key to the success of any research project.

The choices I made affected the study since the principal investigator became annoyed. I had cuffed behind him to inquire about information. The second choice altered all the processes since the position of the research coordinator had to be filled. I could have opted for making correction rather than firing the coordinator (The Research Clinic, n.d). Factors that lead to unethical choices include, being paranoid of the situation leading to rush decision, using wrong metrics to judge, narrowing your thoughts, assumptions and not humankind valuable decision.

Hello Jennifer,

Thanks for this excellent post. Being an IRB board chair is coupled with several situations. I like your explanation on how you handled situations surrounding you—for instance, the situation requiring a path choice or IRB inconsistencies during melanoma study. I support your statement of being able to stick to facts and your explanation on the function of IRO. I agree that the choices made within an IRO role affect the outcome. However, you would have stated some of these effects. You have also done a marvellous job by explaining some of the factors that lead us to unethical choices. The post is knowledgeable indeed.

Hi Brian,

What a great discussion. I like the role you chose of clinical research coordinator. The two choices you made are very imperative while conducting a research. For instance, talking to your supervisor was so ethical since you could make all the necessary agreements to ensure the success of the research. Moreover, they also appeared essential in ensuring the personal lives of individuals are very important. Indeed, it had enough knowledge for those who need to learn.
