Introduction
In most cases, while watching films, it is rather not easily noticeable when certain aspects of the film are changed. The sudden shift is not quite visible since the viewer’s attention is driven towards a different direction. Experiments were carried out in connection with this phenomenon and the necessary results were drawn, analyzed, and discussed to come up with a valid conclusion.
Methods Used
The method applied by Levin-Simons involves calling in a group of participants, 10 in number, to watch a short clip to check for any unusual events. In the first experiment, the participants were not informed of any changes but were informed in the second. Whenever the camera angle change, so did a particular aspect of the film. Thereafter, the participants were asked to fill in some forms while at the same time describe some of the notable changes. In the Simon-Levin method, two experimenters chose to experiment on unsuspecting pedestrians. The experiment was done on both the youths and older individuals. One of them approached a pedestrian asking for directions based on a map he had produced. The pedestrian started giving directions when out of nowhere, other experimenters rudely passed between them while carrying a door. In the course of this event, the first experimenter switched with the second. The second had his map that was identical and sought directions from the same pedestrian. After the study, the second experimenter described who he was and asked several questions. The basic idea is to test whether one is capable of identifying a change in a real-life scenario.
Primary Results
In the Levin-Simons experiment, there seemed to be more attention given in the second experiment than in the first. After being informed of possible changes, participants were able to identify changes. The Simons-Levin experiment noted that most pedestrians noted the rude passage of the persons carrying the door while few noted the change in dress-code. Most of which who noted the dress-code was the youths.
Significance of the Study
In Levin-Simons’s experiment, the study aided in understanding the ideology that different objects properties of a film do not automatically enable one to understand the different views of the film. Simon-Levin’s experiment helps one understand how certain changes may distort one’s memory thus losing sight of some of the interactions made.
Conclusion
The results provided do not necessarily provide a general view of the entire population since it is considered a small number of people thus there is a need for further research (Kelley, 2019).
