Research and Professional Resources for Assessing Community Needs
The readings show a similarity in their analysis of the value of the library and the teachers. Evans & Saponaro (2012) states that a service or product’s potential users can be monitored using market research and environmental scanning. These techniques provide information like how a person uses a service or product and its attitude towards a particular product. The data is useful in planning activities and library programs like community management work. According to Evans & Saponaro (2012), we should spend effort and time on service community studies, including planning new services, developing collections, planning budgets, and adjusting to the staffing patterns.
ACRL’s (2013) research review report provides a detailed view of literature on the value of a library to an institution and suggests steps on demonstrating the cost of a library in an academic context. According to the report, various library value areas are outlined in an institution’s outcome and mission, including student success, student enrollment, student experience, student learning, faculty teaching, and faculty research productivity.
Langford talks about proper selfishness using greater hunger and lesser hunger of teachers in the library. People with a sense of self-worth move from value-adding services (serving others) to nourishing the greater hunger: the need to continuously recharge, revitalize, and renew, hence adding value to their work and lives. Teachers in libraries wear out while satisfying others’ needs through their relentless and continuous support, making them shine. Teachers should acknowledge their true selfishness-greater hunger; by adding value to their new experiences, their sense of exploration, and renewal. Hence, they become physically, socially, spiritually, and mentally. The reading is similar to the revised manifesto, which urges teachers to define their roles to explore new ways to celebrate and promote reading (Valenza, 2010)
