Canadian Tire Case Question
Andy Wnek is the chief information officer (CIO) of the Canadian tire corporation(CTC) while Michael Eubanks is the director of marketing IT. They are all in the same department of information technology. Being in the same department, this explains the lack of progress towards achieving a fully functional business intelligence system. The project was sponsored by CTC and CTR so that they could realize the BI mindset and realize value. The big challenge is that they have combined two departments which have different focus points. Wnek heads the overall information department, but we have Michael Eubanks, who is the director of marketing IT. As long as both guys are in the same department, their roles are different because Michael is concerned about bringing value to the business through the quick wins.
The BI program had its goals which included the development of an enterprise that embraced the value of optimized BI environment. Another goal was to support CTR business and IT strategy and implement incremental organizational and technological required changes to enable the sustainability of the business. In short, the BI goals were long term goals which were focused on long term success. As it can be drawn from the meeting between Wnek and Eubanks, it can be deduced that there was a [problem towards finalization of BI strategies. The biggest challenge was the constant reaction to quick wins. Keeping in mind that Eubanks is the director of marketing IT; his job is to look for any information that can help the business realize value. So the reaction to these quick wins in some way halted the finalization of BI strategies, and we can tell that everyone is playing their role, the different is the focus. Wnek is focused on long term BI strategies while Eubanks is focused on bringing in quick wins, and that is where the great challenge is. As a measure to ensure that they can achieve functionality on the BI strategies, then the department should focus on the same thing without the division of attention.
