COVID-19 effecs on the world economy.
The occurrence of COVID-19 has had a great effect on all the aspects of the society, be it socially, academically, economically, and religiously among other factors. A similar occurrence was evident in the olden days when ‘Black Death’ and Plague that affected Europe. As indicated in the reading, while Spartan armies were ravaging the countryside next Athens, a plague affected the city. The rate of deaths was so high that it led to the loss between 75 000 and 100 000 with the inclusion of the Pericles, leaders of the state, among others (Johnson, Ulrich, & Ulrich, 1918). No one had an idea about what the disease was, where it came from, and means of its treatment. Most could just guess that it would be typhus or smallpox. Generally, the disease afflicted several people with the inclusion of Thucydides, who experienced the disease directly.
Black death also had key effects on the population during its occurrence. First, there was a great decrease in land under cultivation based on the fact that a large number of laborers died as a result of the disease. The general rate of mortality varied from region to region, but it covered a range of an eighth to two-thirds of the population. About one-third of the population of Europe died as a result of the pandemic. England had a population of about 50% of what it had about 100 years prior to the occurrence of the pandemic. Within the country, Black Death enhanced depopulation such that almost one thousand villages were lost.
A similar situation has been witnessed recently during the occurrence of COVID-19. With over 25 million cases, deaths have been experienced in hundreds of thousands so far. In as much as things are starting to normalize, the past few months was quite traumatizing, with a large number of deaths being experienced within a short period of time. Just like in the case of the Black Death, the rate of deaths caused by COVID-19 varies depending on various regions. For instance, African countries have experienced a slightly lower rate of pandemic compared to Western countries.
Similar to the two occurrences, COVID-19 has had a major effect on the world economy. The highest records of unemployment have been experienced in most regions since most sites of employment had to be closed due to the total lockdown, which was applied as a means of curbing the pandemic. Due to a lack of economic involvement, money circulation reduced, making money people strain financially. Another devastating bit relates to the contagiousness of the three pandemics. The most affected people were the doctors who were committed to relieving the affected persons from the effects of the diseases. Due to the low level of technology in the olden days, the rate of deaths was so high that the dead bodies could not be managed properly as they could just lay on the ground for casual burial. A similar situation is experienced currently, with the difference being that the government is prompt in assisting the bereaved families with a few burial expenses like transportation of the dead bodies to the burial sites. Lastly, just like the two cases traumatized those who survived, COVID-19 had had a psychological effect on various people currently; this has been confirmed by the high rate online counseling that has been rampant in the period of COVID-19. The most traumatized sect are the children, based on the fact that most of them may not comprehend much concerning the pandemic.
