Assignment 2b: Framework Discussion

According to Hoerl & Snee (2012), the process improvement framework, the problem-solving framework, and the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) are the three approaches used improvement and problem-solving. The process improvement framework refers to an approach of business practice that identifies, analyzes, and improves existing business processes with the sole purpose of improving user experience, meeting best standard practices, and optimizing performance. The problem-solving framework refers to a blueprint that focuses on designing and drafting hypothesis generated from data exploration and convergence of heuristics. The DMAIC framework is a data-driven strategic approach that integrates the six sigma tools to improve, optimize, and stabilize business designs and processes.

From the definitions and analysis of the three frameworks, they share a common goal: to analyze, improve, optimize, and stabilize business designs and processes. However, the three approaches differ in various ways. For instance, the problem-solving framework focuses on looking for problems before the implantation of processes and tasks. On the other hand, the process improvement framework usually focuses on improving the tasks, especially if they yield unwanted results (Hoerl & Snee, 2012). Additionally, despite process improvement framework and problem-solving framework focusing on specific objectives, optimizing business performance and problem-solving, respectively, the DMAIC framework incorporates these objectives in its processes.

Concerning the application of the three frameworks, consider an organization whose focus is how its customers could benefit from their application through increasing their self-service options to their customers. Before commencement of the task, they identify two problems to the task; one is the type of self-service option that will be best for the customers, two is how the self-service option will be beneficial to customers. This is an example of a problem-solving framework. Once the application has been developed, any negative impacts of the application and the self-service option will require improvement, and this is where the process improvement framework comes in. However, it should be noted that since the DMAIC framework incorporates the other two frameworks, it can be applied from the beginning to the end of the task.
