Dade County School District ESOL Program Models
Dade County School District uses different ESOL program models in addressing the issue of English Language Learners (ELL). The region has become a destination for many immigrants from all parts of the world. Therefore, the implementation of different ELL programs has become essential. One of the School District programs is using collaborative groups where students from a common background can learn English. This program has gained popularity in many schools in the district because of its efficiency in addressing English Language Learning.
In collaborative groups, students are divided into groups of two or more. They are expected to work together within those groups to learn English. The students help each other learn through their discussions in groups better because they face similar challenges in learning the English language. The model falls under the model of collaborative groups that are discussed in Chapter 3. The model in chapter three recommends putting together three or four students in a group, which will help them accomplish their common goal. According to this model, students can use different approaches such as the buddy system, writing response groups, cooperative groups and literature response groups (Saborido, 2016). This depends on the learning goals of the students.
Based on my learning from this module, this is a program that effectively addresses certain needs in the students in terms of learning English. When the students with a common goal are put together, it helps them work better. However, this is not a program that can be used alone. Other programs must be used so that they can also help the students to learn English better. For instance, thematic instruction is a model that can be used to give students proficiency in using English to discuss different subjects.
