One of the strategies that I can use in order to include academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals is creating and using an e-portfolio or online platforms such as a personal website that is used for discussing critical health topics affecting the society such as health policies, recent trends in healthcare and recent research findings (Hanans & Olivo, 2017). This type of engagement will enable to include of personal information such as names, academic accomplishments, and work experiences. Besides, this platform will enable one to use academic knowledge to educate, inform and explain complex health topics. Creating an ePortifolio contributes to professional development by enabling the owner of such ePortifolio to connect with the other nurses who also to contribute to the topics being discussed and enhancing accessibility of personal information such as names, education attainment and work experience. A particular potential employer interested in investigating one’s name online would be awed if he/she finds information relating one’s academic, professional, experience, and career goals in ePortifolio.

The other strategy that help to include academic activities into professional development is the enrolment for short courses that could be formal or informal and which helps to supplement the knowledge and skills learned in major courses. For example, nurse can enroll for the leadership courses, crisis management, and counselling courses that supplement the major courses (Casey & Egan). These course courses enable a nurse to become all-round practitioner and boosts chances of getting a job opportunity. In other words, enrollment for the short courses helps in increases the chances of getting a job.

These strategies align with the Walden University’s emphasis about the social change. The Walden’s mission defines the positive social change as a process of creation and application of ideas, strategies, or actions that help to promote one’s self-worth and dignity and at the same time contributing to the individuals, community, society, and organization’s development (Walden University). By using the ePortifolios such as blogs to educate the society about critical health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart diseases, analysis of the health policies and their implications, and teaching the community about new research evidences and better lifestyle choices contributes to social change by promoting good behaviors and improving society’s welfare. Also, enrolment for the informal and formal short courses contributes to professional development by acquiring the new knowledge and skills that enhances an individual’s job prospects. These skills also contribute to social change if they are applied to serve the members of the society by improving its health and overall wellbeing.
