Social Work Personal Narrative

The choice of the career that one ought to pursue after high school is often a tremendous activity. The activity involves a due process through which an individual needs to think deeply since we are all convinced that this is the determinant of the lives that we shall live in the future. The career determinants that one ought to pursue are driven by a range of qualities that an individual is associated with. It is often traumatizing when a third party determines one’s career, and they are not in love with the career. Parents are required to provide their children an even ground for making the decisions about what they intend to pursue. However, limitations such as the grading system also serve as a drawback to achieving some of the dreams we had while young. However, when one decides to follow their dream, the best thing to do is encourage them and let them see themselves as victors who will make the best out of it. My choice of social work as a profession has a long history, and it has been a dream come true.

Growing up, I was raised in a community where people loved peace, love, and unity. Fights and conflicts were rare in that community. Additionally, teamwork was highly appreciated, and we were taught to ensure that we live together and always make every other person feel self-belonging. When I was done with my high school and had to choose a career path, I had to sit back and think about what I was best at. With the upbringing I had been brought up in, I chose to pursue social work as a profession. Whenever I think about social work, I tend to think about other people; my family, friends, and people within my immediate vicinity. As the name suggests, social work deals with working with people both around and away from their surroundings. As a profession, social work aims to enhance human well-being and aid meet the basic and complex needs. Social work is particularly associated with the vulnerable, oppressed, and people living in poverty within our immediate surroundings.

Social justice is defined as fairness in society. Achieving social justice is primarily based on how we often interact with the people within our vicinity. Fairness in society, additionally, involves the fair distribution of resources within a community. Fairness can be in terms of; housing, employment, healthcare, etc. In a community where discrimination is prevalent, social justice tends to be absent. Discriminating people based on age, color, gender, ethnicity, or religious background is not something new in our ears. Discrimination has been prevalent in society, and the consequences have been seen to be dire. Achieving social justice within society is one of the primary missions of social work. As earlier indicated, working as a social worker implies that one mainly deals with the led advantaged, oppressed, and the members of the minority within the community. As social workers work with these individuals, they aim to ensure that they narrow the gap between the members of the majority and the minority groups in the society. As a result, narrowing the gap leads to the development of an equal community where every person feels appreciated living.

My choice to choose social work as a profession was steered by my upbringing and the dire need to help people attain their goals. Working as a social worker will provide me with a wide range of job opportunities, and searching for a job will be easy. The areas available for a social worker to get employed are vast as one can fit in almost every environment. The population interests of the person mainly guide the choice of the place to work. Populations that might be interested in might be determined by their age, gender, ethnicity, religion, location, or sexuality. The profession is sensitive as it deals with the vulnerable members of the community. As a result, the growing need for social workers will not cease despite the world conditions. Also, being a social worker is versatile as one does not work as a government employee but is rather associated with a wide range of roles within the community. A social worker can work both domestically and internationally, and the deliverables can be diverse. Another reason for the choice of the profession is that it aids in self-improvement and changing people’s lives. One of my best moments is when I have helped a person and saw the joy they develop after the help.

Choosing to pursue the MSW program at North Carolina Central University has been steered by several factors. To begin with, the university is located in a serene environment that is conducive to my health. The climate of the area is cool and not as freezing as the place I come from. Secondly, the university’s achievements in producing substantial individuals working in the same field were of great interest to me. Every person likes to receive education from recognized universities, and so why not me. The university also has plenty of co-curricular programs associated with social work. It is determined to ensuring that they are on the frontline towards achieving social justice through social work.

After pursuing my degree in social work, I intend to base myself in community-based social work. My interest has always been ensuring that every community lives in peace and harmony without discrimination cases. I would also like to major in the determination of the areas that need to be improved within my community and the surrounding communities. Developing social work programs and incorporating members to join the program is one main objective that I aim at achieving. Through the program, we can reach various people and influence them into understanding the meaning of social work and the advantages of social justice. With the program, we can seek government support, which will boost our operation grounds hence seeing our expansion within and outside my community.
