Many a time, human beings often find themselves in a situation where they are crowded with endless and unanswerable questions. For instance, God is the creator of human beings whom He confidently gave the ability to distinguish right from what is wrong. However, it is the same God who punishes humans for making choices that do not please Him. Baggini argues that God created human beings for His purposes denigrate human life, an argument that I strongly agree with. My paper will provide reasons why I agree with this statement basing on Baggini’s
idea.
Baggini affirms that God’s intention for humans is for them to experience growth both physically and spiritually. Notably, human beings were created superior to the rest of the creatures, thereby God granting them absolute dominance over the earth (Vaughn, 416). However, this freedom comes with a limitation. God expects humans to live according to his will, for them to earn a ticket to heaven (Vaughn, 416). Suppose God gave this authority to humans; he might as well have given them the choice of living their lives and controlling the universe on their choosing. It feels more like slavery if they are supposed to live according to the will of a supreme creature to achieve a new home after their life on earth is incomplete; thus, this denigrates human life.
Additionally, humans are expected to believe in God other than living solely for Him. With the freedom of choice granted to humans by God, I don’t see it necessary why the same God restricts them into believing in Him, failure to which they would face dire consequences. Moreover, Baggini affirms that life’s meaning can be achieved through participating in fulfilling activities such as making other people happy, offering service to humanity, and successfully freeing one’s mind. Much as this sounds like such a commendable way to live with others, I still don’t find it a reason for people to believe in a religion. There are several other ways to make life more meaningful; limiting it to the religious factor makes it belittling to human life.
