CRITICAL ANALYSIS SUMMARY

While reading Susan Sontag book “In Plato’s Cave….”On Photography”, I must admit that the essay was very hard to read and understand because of the vocabulary used. After reading the book, it greatly changed my entire view on photography. Susan Sontag was not a photographer, but she gathered all the information from her intellectual so that the readers can create the usual reflection when it comes to photography. Sontag’s main idea was to seek and elaborate on what runs in photographer’s mind while creating reflection. Though Plato had his own way of view when it comes to photography, he did not judge Sontag’s view on how she relates with new photographers that she meets with the normal ordinary photographers who are the usual citizens.

The first part was so generic with full of undiscovered truth that has to do with most of the photographers in today’s company. Though at the end of the essay, she expressed her disappointment in most photographers because of her encounters in photographers that was encountered due to poverty and war. Her disappointment was expressed and easily seen in the following quote, “I saw a broken illusion when I looked at the photographs. Something was not right because I feel wounded inside, “page 21. Sontag experience should be an example to all aspiring photographers. To take a photo is particularly to participate into other person’s life in general thus as we age along the way we lose friends and this help us to reflect on the moments we could have captured together.

I literally come to believe that reading Sontag’s article is going to help my photography skills though she allows us to disagree with her opinion and come up with our own views, Sontag’s approach is going to help in this journey of being a photographer.
