Research Paper Summary
An Austrian psychiatrist has described the characteristics related to one of his clients suffering from Asperger Syndrome. He mainly highlighted the emotional and social problems faced by his client regularly. The article has been described by (Bernad-Ripoll, 2007) determined to present a video presentation of a 9-year-old child suffering from Asperger Syndrome. The video presentation aimed to understand the emotions and ability to recognize the personal self in a normal environment like being at home by the child. The social impairment experienced in the Asperger syndrome restricts in proceeding with understanding non-verbal behaviors. The reason behind this behavior can be accessed from the lack of emotional psychology while interacting with friends and family. A child who is suffering from Asperger syndrome is different from an Autistic child. In autism, children are indifferent in expressing emotions (Bernad-Ripoll, 2007). In contrast, the children with Asperger Syndrome are rather felt awkward in engaging in a social or emotional situation. In this article, the assessment method applied to 9-years and an eight-month-old boy named Alan with an IQ lived at full-scale. The child was diagnosed with a certified psychiatrist. The study happened in Alan’s home. The result showcased that Alan was unable to control his feelings of anxiety, anger, and frustration. The result defined that Alan generated 55% of accuracy in expressing emotion during the initial videotaping sessions.
The data has been retrieved from other environments as well to differentiate the child’s behavior. The article showed that the result described an improvement in understanding different emotions and their occurrence within the home environment rather than other environments (Bernad-Ripoll, 2007). The videotape’s overall result was showcased that social stories and emotions affected by the videotaping session within Alan. Emotions from a particular situation effectively teach a child suffering from Asperger syndrome to recognizing and understanding emotions. During the 11th session, Alan achieved 100% accuracy in expressing emotion. Although the result also showcased that during the 18th session, Alan only gave the correct answer to 50% questions. This inconsistency can be related to Alan’s awkwardness with the videotaping sessions (Bernad-Ripoll, 2007). This study’s limitation is that the study is only implemented to one child within a limited period.
A child with Autism spectrum disorder or ASD struggle is to communicate with others. The disorder affects children in early childhood, and the symptoms reside throughout their life. Children who exhibit the disorder show various challenges such as anxiety, aggression, noncompliance, and self-injury. Most adults who exhibit Autism spectrum disorder can face unemployment and social isolation (Black and Therrien, 2018). They are most likely to be dependent on their family or other social services to survive. Many families seek proper treatment for their ASD children to reduce the challenges and amplify various life skills and functionality. A family with an autistic child needs to have training.
The behavioral therapist focuses on providing training to the parents to supply the need of the autistic child. Autistic children need to get support from not only their parents but also from their whole family. 80% of parents feel that their children face negligence and unfair treatment (Black and Therrien, 2018). A study also showed that parents with ASD child suffer more stress than other parents. Parents who have an especially able child face challenges to manage the child’s everyday behavior, and they failed to meet the needs of the child. It increases the stress level of the parents.
It is important to minimize such challenges. Parent training or PT is broadly used by families who have a child with an autism spectrum disorder. The effect of parent training is very useful with a younger child. There is little to no evidence present about the effect of parent training on an older autistic child. The study focuses solely on developing the idea about parent training interventions for school-going children with Autism spectrum disorder (Black and Therrien, 2018). The study was conducted with 622 children with ASD involving fifteen parent training studies.
The paper describes the participants, interventions s and the result of interventions in detail. The result is divided into four sections. The first section describes the relationship between participants and the interventions. The second section analyzed and described the parent training benefit with the parent training outcome on the child. The last section describes the general effects of the interventions in a child, and it also analyzes various types and their effect on the interventions. The studies have limitations in the review and Meta-analysis sector. The establishments of the comparisons between variables are difficult.
