Cyber Security and Best Practices

Cybersecurity is referred to as the process of defending computers, mobile devices, servers, networks, and electronic systems from malicious attacks. It is also referred to as electronic information security. Cybersecurity faces a lot of challenges due to the evolving nature of risks that arise every day. Companies and institutions have focused on ensuring that their vital systems components are protected from the threat. However, due to modern technology’s emergence, threats are advancing and changing quickly, thus exposing computers and other electronic gadgets into Risk. This has led many organizations to promote more adaptive and proactive approaches to cybersecurity.

Why is Cyber Security Essential?

Cybersecurity is essential because of the government, corporate, medical organizations, military, financial institutions, and crucial process data on computers and other electric devices. This data can sometimes be sensitive, and therefore unauthorized access can negatively impact the organization. Many organizations transmit their data from one device to another in the course of conducting business; thus, cybersecurity is dedicated to protecting the data and the systems used to process it and store it. As cyber-attacks arise every day, organizations and companies are tasked with safeguarding their information, especially financial records and personnel information.

The Scale of Cyber Threat

The worldwide cyber threat continues to evolve rapidly with a rising number of information breaches every year. The latest report, which was released in 2019 by Risk Based Security, reveals that 7.9 billion records have been exposed to information breach for the last one year only. This figure doubles the number of records exposed in the previous year. Retailers, public entities, and medical services experienced the largest number of breaches with cybercriminals taking responsibility. These sectors are most vulnerable to cybercriminals because they collect medical and financial data using public networks, which can be attacked easily. The scale of cyber threat is expected to rise by 2022 as the technology advances every day, and new applications are made. All countries should design cybersecurity frameworks to combat cyberattacks and develop strict laws in dealing with cybercriminals.

Management of Cyber Security

The National cybersecurity alliance recommends approaches to cybersecurity where corporate management is charged with the role to prioritize cybersecurity management in all businesses. The coalition advises companies to be always prepared to respond to cyber-attacks, and if it arises, the response should be instant, thus ensuring the company’s reputation is always protected. Cyber risk assessment should also be done to implement a plan which mitigates cyber Risk. The plan should include technologies and processes required to create mature cybersecurity software, which ensures the information is protected. The cybersecurity practices must be updated to accommodate the rising attacks carried out by the cybercriminals. This means that security measures should be combined with security-minded employees, thus providing the best defense against cybercriminals.

While technology is crucial in different organizations and individual businesses, computer security is needed to protect cyber-attacks data. The most common technology which should be used includes antivirus software, malware protection, DNS filtering, and other email security solutions. Through this technology, the organization’s data will be protected, thus keeping the information confidential.
