Assignment 1

Workers are a high-risk group who are exposed to myriad of occupational hazards. Biological hazards are of utmost risk for infectious disease that can be transmitted by different methods: airborne, blood borne, contact and zoonotic diseases.

Write a page long essay answering the following questions:

1. Choose at least one occupational group that are at risk of contracting infectious diseases at their workplace e.g.; farmers, mortuary workers, HCWs, etc.

2. Discuss at least one infectious disease.

  1. Choose at least one occupational group that are at risk of contracting infectious diseases at their workplace e.g.; farmers, mortuary workers, HCWs, etc.

Human beings are generally are at risk of contracting infectious diseases, some more at risk than others. One of the determinants of exposure to infectious diseases includes the occupation that one is in. There some occupational groups that involves one dealing directly with people who are already infected. Others do not involve direct contact with infected people meaning that contact may be reduced by scheduling online meetings and transacting any business online. This is however impossible to workers who deal directly with people, some of who may be infected by these infectious diseases.

Infectious diseases, being highly contagious, may be transmitted from one person to another through contact, air droplets, contaminated drinks and food, insects which may carry the infectious agent, body fluid such as blood and semen. For instance, a person working in an office setting is likely to spread the common cold once he or she catches it to the rest of his or her colleagues. However, this can be avoided if the person works from home if they catch the common cold. A teacher is also likely to be infected by chickenpox if they attend to a student who has chickenpox. It is only after a person exhibiting chickenpox symptoms starts showing the symptoms that others will know he or she is suffering from it. As such if a student is suffering from it, a teacher who deals directly with the student may contract it.

Health care workers are, however, the most vulnerable group of people when it comes to contracting infectious diseases. For instance, during the outbreak of COVID-19, most businesses were closed, and people were encouraged to work from home. However, hospitals were operating because they had to treat COVID-19 patients. There were instances where health care workers would stay awake for hours tending to the COVID-19 patients who were brought in the hospitals for treatment. Some of these health care workers do not put on protective clothing while they attend to sick patients. This exposes them to the virus.

Further, before the existence and gravity of COVID-19 were known, health care workers were tending to patients without knowing that some of them were infected with this virus. The coronavirus is highly contagious, and this resulted in the infection of health care workers. For instance, the doctor who was the whistleblower of the existence of the virus contracted it while treating his patients and died from it.

  1. Discuss at least one infectious disease.

As mentioned in this study, infectious diseases can be airborne, foodborne, zoonotic or transmitted through contact of through bodily fluids, for instance, semen. HIV/AIDS is one example of infectious diseases transmitted through bodily fluids and blood. This disease, caused by HIV, weakens the immune system of an individual and makes the individual susceptible to opportunistic infections. One can contract this virus during blood transfusion where infected blood is transfused to them, from mother to child during childbirth, and through the exchange of bodily fluids, for instance, semen. As such, HIV/AIDS is a blood-borne infectious disease.

The most common and fatal infectious diseases affect the respiratory tract system of the infected person. Tuberculosis (TB) is an example of an infectious disease that affects a person’s lungs. A bacterium causes this disease. The most common symptom of tuberculosis is persistent coughing. It spreads from an infected person through air droplets that are released when the infected person coughs. Even though reported cases of TB have reduced over the years, especially in developed countries, people who have HIV/AIDS are at risks of contracting the disease. There are many strains of TB, leading to microbial resistance of drugs which has caused a huge problem when it comes to the treatment of the disease.
