In today’s organizations, it is essential for leaders to have benchmarks for assessing their teams’ productivity. Team productivity is a measure of the quality of output produced by a team within a sensible amount of time. Team productivity assesses the level of satisfaction attained by a team by performing tasks efficiently. As a leader of a technical team, I will not only use their final product when measuring the team’s productivity but I will also include other interpersonal elements. Interpersonal elements such as the social cohesion among the team members and behavior such as absenteeism have a significant impact on group productivity. For instance, a team might produce exceptional work and meet its deadline but most of the tasks were performed by only a few team members. By assessing the interpersonal elements of the team, I will be able to ascertain that the team’s productivity was attributed to a high level of collaboration and cooperation among the team members.
As a team leader, rewarding a productive team will be essential in motivating the other teams to maximize their productivity and work output. Rewards are extrinsic motivators to the individual members within the teams and the whole team. Recognition is one type of reward that can be awarded to the most productive team. Honoring the most productive team and recognizing their efficiency and exemplary work before the other teams will trigger a repeat action to the most productive team and also motivate other teams to be more productive. Gain-sharing is another form of a team-based reward that can be awarded to the most productive team. Since productivity has a direct correlation with profitability, the team can be given a percentage of value which resulted from their productivity based on a prearranged formula. The team can also be awarded an incentive payment based on its increased level of performance. These types of rewards will foster a high level of collaboration and teamwork, which will ultimately boost the productivity of the awarded team as well as the other teams.
