Digital Security
Digital or cybersecurity is defined as a multidisciplinary affair that involves the development of hardware, software, and policies to combat cybercrimes (Wong, 2016). With the increasing technological advances around the world, more skilled hackers continue to emerge, targeting company websites and secured databases to steal information or commit fraud. The wireless network presents numerous advantages – increased productivity, mobility, expandability, and deployment (Choi et al., 2008). Nonetheless, it poses several threats to businesses that compromise the confidentiality of their users’ data. For instance, most frequent cyber-attacks have been a result of malicious and accidental associations, identity theft, denial of service, and MAC spoofing (Choi et al., 2008). The primary aim of digital security is to ensure integrity, preserve user privacy, and maintain information systems availability. In this regard, businesses must review and restructure their security measures to minimize or avoid wireless security attacks.
In October 2013, the Adobe Corporation faced an appalling data breach where hackers stole approximately three million credit card records and login details belonging to its customers. The breach exposed over 7.5 million user accounts, names, IDs, debit and credit card information, products they were using, and other confidential information, including the company’s (Cimpanu, 2019). The hackers obtained the customers’ encrypted passwords and took some of the company’s products’ source codes. As a preventative measure, the company could have ensured that all the access points are secure and periodically changed their default system settings as hackers easily exploit them. Another wireless security attack was the eBay incident in May 2014. According to Peterson (2014), one hundred and forty-five million user accounts were exposed, revealing customers’ names, addresses, and encrypted passwords. For this particular case, the hackers used the employees’ credentials to access the company’s network and secured data systems. The corporation ought to have trained its workforce on basic secure wireless behavior concepts to ensure that they pay attention to any suspicious activity, to prevent the attack.
