Attitudes, Values, and Emotions in Organizations and Employee Engagement

Attitudes, values, emotions, and employee engagement set the rhythm of tasks achievement and thus determine the success of a given institution. In an environment where the stated elements coexist, unity of purpose, improved performance, and increased production become the defining factors of the entity’s success. The period between September and October last year, Yamaha India experienced a stint of employee unrests at the famous Chennai factory. The workers were rioting against the expulsion of some of their coworkers and the management’s concerted efforts to prohibit the employee against forming a labor union. The reasons for the unrest squarely touch on the attitudes, values, and emotions of employees and redress to such a stalemate can only be achieved through employee engagement. The management applied the concept of employee engagement where each employee was entitled to a three-year settlement deal (“Yamaha India signs three-year wage pact with workers’ union,” 2019). The company also promised to establish better communication channels, especially with its workers, which will aid future conflict resolutions. The intervention by the firm’s management was aimed at restoring a healthy work environment by prioritizing on employees’ emotions, values and attitudes.

November 1st, 2018, Google employees around the world staged a walkout in protest over how the company’s leadership handled sexual abuse cases. The organizers of the protest described their workplace as having a culture that was not working for everyone. Sexual misconduct mainly carried out by an executive on a junior employee negatively disrupts the entire workforce’s attitudes, emotions, and work values. The goal of the planned protest was to compel Google to have substantiated mechanisms of handling sexual harassment, including employee empowerment (Castillo & D’Onfro, 2018). For example, the organizers of the walkout were demanding that a representative of employees join the corporation’s board and for the firm to end involuntary arbitration. With the agreed compensation, the company hoped to achieve employee engagement.
