Teams and Relationships in the Workplace
An organizational environment is a place where people bring many differences together. Coworkers have unique values and personalities (the University of Minnesota, n.d.). Even though careers require less interaction, many jobs call for interpersonal communication. People spend a lot of time at work; therefore, the workplace is the place where people build relationships (the University of Minnesota, n.d.).For example, Human Resources is among the list of careers comprised of teams that need to practice teamwork (University of California San Francisco, 2016). Thus, in this line of work, collaboration is the required trait that makes a good coworker. Teamwork is dependent on trusting the other coworker to come through with their part without watching them at all time (Team Real World, 2015).To promote teamwork, organizations need to have team development workshops through interactive games and exercises that strengthen cooperation and decision-making processes. (University of California San Francisco, 2014).other characteristics that make an excellent coworker include proper office etiquette and interpersonal skills.
Office etiquette can tell the difference between committed and non-committed employees. A person can differentiate the two based on how they get along with others in the office (Matteson, 2013). Workers with proper office etiquette practice common courtesy, use effective communications and respect other people’s time. Having good interpersonal skill is another trait that makes worthy employees. Interpersonal skills are the tools people use to communicate and interact with one another in a workplace setting (Gunslinger0011, 2016). Some of the capabilities include verbal communication, listening skills, negotiation skills, decision-making, problem-solving, assertiveness, and nonverbal communication. Basing on these skills a good coworker should be assertive in the sense that he/she is self-assured and confident in his/her actions. A good worker should be a problem solver, have active listening skills with positive nonverbal communication skills. He/she should know how to use correct words and tone (the University of Minnesota, n.d.).Employees should also have excellent negotiation skills that allow them to discuss and reach an agreement professionally. In as much as workers are supposed to have good traits, other employees fail to portray this in their work relationships. Some of the characteristics that make a terrible worker are negative nonverbal communication and poor listening skills. Other traits include poor negotiation and verbal communication skills.
