Essentialism

My philosophy in education is essentialism, which is seen as a philosophy whose supporters hold the conviction that a learner needs to learn the primary subjects of the convention accordingly. In the essentialism philosophical school of thought, the goal and objective of education are to make sure that learners are equipped with the academic knowledge requirements through the enactment of back-to-basic techniques. Therefore, as a philosophy, essentialism also makes sure that the accrued human civilization wisdom as taught in the popular subjects of academics is useful when transferred from instructors to learners.

The Effect of Essentialism on my Style of Teaching

As a teacher, I recognize essentialism as a teacher-centered philosophy, with the fact that the role of a teacher in class is a significant aspect of philosophy. Therefore, essentialism puts me at the center of the classroom, which affects my mode of teaching in that I have to adopt a more rigid and disciplinary approach to teaching. Although other philosophies in education are centered on the student, essentialism demands that as a teacher, I need to ensure order in the learning environment because this is vital to learning. Effectual learning cannot happen in a chaotic and noisy environment (Forbes, 887). It is my role as a firm supporter of essentialism to instill order in class and ensure that learning operations are well run. Unlike other academic philosophies, essentialism will influence my mode of teaching because it requires me to interpret all the essentials in the process of learning alongside the assumption of the leadership roles and the defining the classroom tone.

How Will my Philosophy be modified by my Teaching Placement

Although I aspire to stick to essentialism as my academic philosophy, the teaching placement tends to be significantly liable to modify this philosophy with the fact that I will spend time with other teachers and learners who have different backgrounds and academic philosophies. From such interactions, I might adopt parts of the other educational theories and incorporate them with essentialism to meet the needs of my learners (Sahin 195). Recognizing that various learners have various learning needs that depend on aspects like their backgrounds, I believe that it is vital to modify my philosophies to accommodate the needs of all learners in the teaching placement. This will promote knowledge acquisition among learners and excellent teaching in my profession.

How my values, political proclivities, the consciousness of class, racial perspectives, and historical concepts impact my outlook

Various aspects of my values, class consciousness, historical insights, political inclinations, and racial perspectives tend to influence my outlook in that they are the primary determinants of the form of philosophies, values, and beliefs, I adopt in life and my teaching profession.  For example, my values influence me that I stay firm in and believe in meaningful life aspects, which I am also able to instill into my students while teaching. On the issue of Political proclivity, it is observed that various political outfits make efforts in affecting the system of education by instilling their values to learners (Forbes 885). Politics influence the kind of values that I, as a teacher, cultivate to my learners. Finally, concerning class consciousness and racial point of view, it is notable that various races have different opinions on the values which are desirable and those that are not. From this observation, a classroom’s racial composition is capable of affecting the kind of educational philosophy that I adopt as a teacher.

The essence of Having an Educational philosophy

Because an educational philosophy reflects the aim and intent of the teacher, the classroom, and the academic institution, the importance of providing an academic philosophy cannot be underestimated (Sahin 200). Thus, academic philosophy is an essential part of the mission and vision statements of the teacher, the classroom and the academic institution that, in effect, explains the subjects taught, the way they are taught, and even more importantly, the values trained both directly and indirectly concerning the subjects taught. An educational philosophy is vital in studying and raising the issue of what education encompasses, its purpose, the human subject, and the aspect of being aware of mid-authority challenges.

It also helps in comprehending the link between education and society, among other aspects. Since the era of Rousseau, theories in education have been connected to developmental psychology theories and human development. In reference to this, several functions are proposed and attributed to having an educational philosophy. For example, Sahin (196) notes that local community enterprise depends on the education of young people and that it is a challenging and complex task to educate learners to be responsible, enterprising individuals, and thoughtful. This demands a better understanding of moral principles, ethical values, political theories, and aesthetics and their identity in society.
