Summer Fellowship Final Reflective Essay

Special education law is exceptionally vital since it takes into account those children with special needs and performs a vital role in enhancing their cognitive development and other developmental milestones. I have come to learn the significance of this law in my engagements with the Advocates for Justice and Education (AJE). Based on my ten years’ experience with AJE, that is located in Washington, D.C, I have learned that most young people have more extraordinary talents that have remained unexploited. This is because most people with special needs are not accorded the proper respect or adequate attention by offering them special education. Regarding the type of work entailed at the Advocates for Justice and education, drafting of request for the MPD on all the incidents that have occurred in various schools forms part of significant work done.

In this regard, the reports captured relate to the Woodson HS and other firms, and covers for the period of 2019-2020. In the present reflection, it significant to mention some of the crucial concepts that I have learned from my engagement with the Advocates for Justice and Education. First, I have that the special education law is fundamental in triggering a change in needy students through cognitive development. Besides, the law advocates for the rights of the students equally without any prejudice. Worth noting, the law calls for the collective responsibility for both the parents and the trainers to ensure that a positive impact is created on the performance and social relationship of the needy children.

I have also learned the significance of empowering the parents toward advocating for the rights of their children as well as their unique needs. The primary significance of such empowerment is developing and nurturing the individuals’ behaviours to avoid future behavioural problems that may get portrayed by the children. Besides, discipline among the children will also be promoted in case the parents instil the right cultural norms in them as they interact with their peers and other people as well.

Based on progress toward my goal, I have learned new concepts and information that can enrich and make better the lives of the needy students. The first, positive progress in developing client communication skills to support smooth communication with clients and address their issues amicably. Besides, advocating for a more robust client relationship will trigger some level of loyalty for the program. Secondly, I have improved on my time management. Time is a crucial resource and proper management of my time has been thriving since I prioritize my skills based on the complexity of task given. Third, I have learned to work with a team or in a group efficiently.

I have found working with the team to be quite impressive due to the sharing of core skills and competency among people. Nonetheless, apart from working in a group setting, I have also learnt to appreciate my work and my concerted efforts. For instance, through my effort, I have drafted a google document with a stipulated timeline, showing a flow of events chronologically from 2019-2020. Besides, I have also solved a case between a mother and son who filed a case against the school for failing to offer special needs for the son.

I have made a meaningful difference to the clients in different ways. First, I have appropriately engaged them through being empathetic and listening to their problems. This has created room for the in-depth analysis of their problems. Secondly, I have advocated for their active involvement in helping and nurturing the behaviours of the children to reduce the chances of future behavioural issues. Moreover, I have participated in the policy formation and various projects with multiple benefits on the clients.
