Why do employees resist change, and what can you do about it as a supervisor or manager?
Most employees in any organization feel threaten and resist the urge or need to change because they feel threatened by the change. They feel as if this new change will phase them off from their positions or affect their income. Some resist change because they feel left out in making important decisions that affect them. Hence there is a need for a manager to involve the employees in the change-making process. For in the words of John C. Maxwell, “change is inevitable.”
One of the ways a manager can help employees adjust to change is by considering them. It can be achieved by involving them in affecting some changes in the organization. It can be achieved by making employees feel secure and ensuring that the change at hand will not affect their current position or income negatively, as this may generate some resistance. As a manager, you can also help your employees adapt to change by providing the necessary training to affect the change. If any kind the training at hand is going to affect them financially, then subsidize the cost. Make them feel comfortable financially. Doing this will boost employees’ performance because “business owners need employees who can get the job done because employee performance is critical to the company’s overall success (Leonard, 2019).”
Keep your employees motivated. Tell them of the benefits that come with the change and how it will improve their lives in general. They need to see the value of this change to them. Let them feel part of the change-making team. A monetary reward can also boost morale. The manager should also create an environment where the employees feel that their manager is there for them. That supportiveness from the management goes a long way in creating assurance. “Employers need to understand that content and a motivated employee have a higher probability of making significant contributions to the organization (Gupta, 2013).” As a manager, it is your role to make sure employees feel content, as this plays a significant role in any organization’s general success.
