Every college student dreams of comfortably studying and securing their dream jobs. Nevertheless, learners must choose wisely where to live as it influences their performance in college. Thus, students must decide whether to live with their parents at home or independently during college. Numerous factors affect a student’s choice to live at home or individually, such as freedom, privacy, cost, and family support. Nonetheless, living with parents has been proven to be more beneficial than living independently during college period because it allows students to have more freedom to experience life, to have more privacy, and to save money.
First and foremost, most students prefer living with their parents to cut on costs. A survey conducted by Sallie Mae in 2017 shows that half of all college students reside at home to save money (Carrns, 2012). Campus life can be pretty expensive as one has to pay tuition fees and incur other costs like food, textbooks, accommodation, and utilities (Rawlings, 2015). For this reason, college students from low or average income families may choose to stay at home to cut accommodation costs (Carrns, 2012). Students end up saving money, which could be used on meals and room costs, which are habitually inflated (Gabriel, 2019). For instance, by living with their parents, they get to eat home-cooked meals. Therefore, parents end up paying lower college costs since kids living at home relive them much of the college financial burden.
Additionally, living at home ensures students never lose their privacy. Living independently in student’s residential areas is often chaotic since students have to share some utilities within set rules (Wei & Chei, 209). For instance, most residential areas have laws that invade students’ privacy, such as curfews and the use of utilities such as lights. These areas are noisy as students move in and out of their rooms. As a result; studying becomes problematic due to the numerous distractions or rules.
On the other hand, living with parents earns children privacy (Gabriel, 2019). Parents get to be understanding that children need space to study and carry out other activities. For instance, if a student needs lights at 3 am to study, parents will understand. Parents sacrifice space and a certain level of privacy for the sake of their college kids being successful.
Finally, living at home grants learners the freedom to experience life. Most college students look forward to joining college to experience freedom and adventure (Lile et al., 2018). College is the preeminent chance to live independently and make the most of one’s freedom. Living with parents is more beneficial since they help students employ the eccentrically unfamiliar freedom they gain to make informed decisions, unlike when living independently. They learn how to use the freedom to develop their skills, build their network, and evade confining choices and being confident to face college challenges (English, 2015). Unfortunately, the freedom student’s gain living independently drives them to engage in dangerous activities such as abusing alcohol and drugs.
In conclusion, living at home with family during college plays a significant role in enhancing the student’s performance. Living with parents allows students to cut on costs, which is hugely beneficial to low-income families who cannot afford high college education costs. Living at home also grants students the freedom to experience life as well as privacy to have control over their activities. Therefore, living with parents during college can earns student more benefits than living independently.
